It seems to me like just a new set of conventions for doing things that replace older ones.... Just an excuse to retrain.
Fun to experiment with, these new fangled "innovations", but are they really useful...? Seems like hype to me.

Autoboxing/unboxing and typesafe enumerations have already proved useful in a lot of code I've written for my java RPG. I'm sure templates would be useful if I had the motivation to go back through and rewrite all my Collection based code.
It definitely makes code less verbose.
