Post FF6 his best work is definitely in FF9. FF7 and FF10 both have some pretty good tracks though. FF8's music was pretty forgettable IMO.

Unless you are referring to some joke that I threw into that statement Fruedianistically, I don't see what confuses you. That is my honest opinion on the matter.

Er, perhaps there was some misused terminology and hyperbole in my original statement: by "song" I, of course, meant "music" or "melody" (as there are no lyrics). And by "best X ever", I meant of that genre. But, even that is sort of exaggerated, as I like the music on several of the other games. However, the fact remains that, despite the above alterations, I stand by my original statement. And fail to see justification for your amusement at it.

I think the word Marsh makes him giggle.

You honestly think these:

are good songs? I know it's Nobuo, but that's worse than liking N-Sync.

You're right - that Qu's marsh song really is good! I'd forgotten about it...

I think in general I was just disapointed with FFIX, which is probably why I don't remember very much of it. I've played through VII 5 times (finally managed to get Great Gospel last time!) and similarly through VIII, (and VI, and V, and IV) but I had no inclination to replay IX.

Feel free to disagree with me, but I think something's been missing since that game...

I think you have it backwards. I think there is something missing in 7 and 8 that 9 has.

Yes. Yes, I do. Especially Qu's Marsh. Who are you to say what someone else considers good music? I personally don't care for Pop or Rap or forms along those lines, but other people do, and I respect their opinion in the matter. My taste in music, while not entirely modern (in the sense of present day, not the period), is quite eclectic, and the music on that game, especially those two sample songs, fall into that realm of enjoyment. I could very well say that you, in disliking those tracks, have absolutely no taste in music. If I were to go to that extreme, that would be my opinion.

Do you mean the nimiety that plagues the genre: the traditional medieval setting?

No I meant it's actually fun to play. I never cared for 7 (I mean I can appreciate it and what it did for the whole console RPG Genre), and 8 was fun for about a few hours and then began to bore me to tears.

The only games (I think) that are console RPG's that still have a medival fantasy bent are the Grandia ones. I wouldn't necassarily call that a plague. In fact, I would say right now we are experiencing a plague of sci-fi fantasy games.

FF9 is far better than 7 and 8. 8 was damn good though, 7 was just utter shit.

I've got a theory as to why FFVII is so disliked by people who like the IXth game, with it's dreadful storyline, unimaginative battle engine, and highest level of random encounters in the series. But I don't want to offend anyone.

I've got a theory why people who hated RPG's before FF7 liked FF7 so much- what with it's corny plot, terrible character design and watered down combat, watered down item system and watered down exploration. But I don't want to offend anyone, either.

You've got to be kidding. You have actually played it, right?

I think it helps to put FFVII in it's era. It really was the first computer game to tell such an ambitious story. If you think it's corny, I probably can't convince you otherwise.

However, in my opinion, I think it's very original, and despite a few lines of dodgy translation early in the game, I also think it's very well told.

Some of the things the game tried to do are, in terms of what videogames had done before, spectacular. I'm talking about developing Sephiroth as such a perfect villain, Cloud's relationship with his mother, how well the medium is used (remember the scene where you control cloud as a child while his older self beats up Aeris?), about the strained, touching relationship between Tifa and Cloud, and the way in which every character got their moment in the spotlight.

The game pretty much invented what's become a modern set of RPG cliches, so calling it corny is a little silly.

As for character design, Barret, Red XIII and Cait Sith could all have benifited from another few hours design, but what's really more important is how well each character was developed. Barret may be no more than a Mr. T wannabe, but his story in north corel is excellent.

It's probably not as good as the Job system, but it's much better than IX's. Oh, and FFVII invented the limit break.

watered down item system

What on earth are you talking about? Compared to what? It's practically the same as the item system from VI (and IX).

Quote:
watered down exploration.

Again, compared to what? Several areas of the game world are optional (the sunken submarine, Wutai, the materia caves, the chocobo master's house, the forbidden forest, the shrine at the source of the waterfall, the honey bee inn...). Granted, it doesn't compare to the practically non-linear second world of VI, but it's far from watered down. Oh, and it's also got the weapons.

You've got one fair point though - I definitly could have phrased myself a little better. Sorry.

Meh. Compared to FF6 of course, or FF4. FF7 did not invent the limit break- nor did it make any big advances on the RPG genre other than combining the gameplay style of Alone in The Dark with RPG elements.

Of course all of the FF's seem watered down compared to Dragon Warrior 3+'s class system (I think it was used in three, four and seven- were you could go to a class temple and exchange classes but keep some skills- it was amazingly brilliant in design).

But it boils down to this- most people who like FF7 aren't really into the idea of RPG's. Most people I know who worship FF7 and hate all other FF's are the type of people that claim they like RPG's but only like one (FF7), and hate almost all others (and no- Zelda is not and never was an RPG- it has no elements form RPG's that cannot be found also in adventure games).

I really don't understand this debate on which FF has the best music or combat or anything. To me, they are all exactly the same, and boring.
