What games do you like Bjorn (RPG-wise)? Just wondering. I bet you also think all of the Dragon Warriors are the same (and boring), etc etc. I could understand this if you are comparing it to PC-style RPG's since they very but have similiar *rpgstyle elements* as console rpg's....

Ah well, I'll admit, I don't like FF's random turn based combat screens style combat that plagues them all. As such I've never been able to enjoy any other part of the game either, such as music or story.

But it boils down to this- most people who like FF7 aren't really into the idea of RPG's. Most people I know who worship FF7 and hate all other FF's are the type of people that claim they like RPG's but only like one (FF7), and hate almost all others (and no- Zelda is not and never was an RPG- it has no elements form RPG's that cannot be found also in adventure games).

Let's just agree to differ.

Madrake:
I like ff7... Along with ff3 (original 3, for the nes), ff4, ff6, ff9, etc... ff7 may have had absolutely LAUGHABLE character models (I still can't believe the 'fat npc' model was made of two tapering boxes that actaully came apart when he bent over O_o), but in my opinion the game was fun, and had a great story at its core. (Though there were some parts I would have left out... Like... The 'toysaurus' cait sith. It bugs me how almost every otherwise serious rpg has to have some kind of stupid attempt at 'humor')
Oh, and I'm just curious, what game did have limit breaks first if it wasn't ff7? (just wondering, not trying to sound hostile)

EDIT: The item system in 7 was EXACTLY (I mean exactly) the same as nearly all the other FFs... If not all. So was the exploration, and the battle system was watered down in no ways that I can see... Except if you compare it to the job system of ff5, but you must realize there are some people on this world who don't believe more complicated=good.

I did a quick search, and apparently, Lufia 2. Which is wierd, as I nearly finished that game and don't remember anything like that! But there you go - I was wrong on that one.

Also, I guess if you want to be technical, FF6 actually had a form of limit breaks now that I think of it - it wasn't very well documented, and it was extremely rare, but if you had one character left at extremly low hp and you chose to attack, you'd do a magnificant once off show of power.

Lufia 2? Indeed, I don't remember anything like limit breaks in that game either.
Ah well, I'll have to try it again soon.

I find it amusing that the bulk of the people who don't care for 7 (and later) generally prefer the games pre-7. Which seems to suggest that they have some problem with the graphical element. I hardly see how moving the series towards a greater degree of realism is a bad thing. (I say this even with respect to FF7, which, heh, is hardly realistic at all.) I've also come into contact with people who don't care for the games because, as in the case of FFX-2, the characters were percieved, in a purely puritanistic sense, as sluty. (For those whom catch my reference, the person(s) in question wouldn't even play the game, such was their phobia of it.)

I myself enjoy a wide range of RPGs, with the exception of the ports of D&D to the PC, which I don't really care for.

I don't much like the graphical style of the 3d FF games.
Why? I don't really know, but I just prefer the classic 2d overhead style.
It's just a personal opinion.

Better graphics aren't bad, but different graphics can be-- And the 3d FFs had very different graphics. Please don't get me wrong, it doesn't ruin the game, but I've never really liked the way square(...enix) did their 3d rpgs.
Oh, and I've already made it clear that I enjoy ff games both post-7 and pre-7.

I played this game as Estpolis 2 (Japanese version) and there may have been some differences, but you had a bar that filled up as you took damage, and you could use different techniques by drawing from that pot. The techniques you could choose were dependant on what equipment you had. Some of them were very useful. Many others were not.

I fall into the category of not liking 7 and preferring the prior games. 4 and 5 are my favorites. But I have to totally disagree with it being for graphical reasons. The reason I didn't like FF7 was having to sit through hours and hours of story sequences. It really sucked the life out of the fun for me when, after playing for 4-5 hours through that big city place (midgar? medgwar? madagascar?), and after FINALLY getting to the overworld (yay!) I walked 5 seconds to the first town and was immediately plunked into almost an hour's worth of dialogue. Seriously. FF7 moved with all the speed of a slug-infested sloth. That is why I didn't like it.

Prior Final Fantasy games managed to have an interesting story with limited dialogue, sot that you PLAYED through it instead of scrolled through it. Reams of text are not mandatory for a great story.

Let me just add that while graphically speaking I prefer 2D, the worst of all for me is playing a game with BAD 3D graphics. The character models in FF7 certainly fall into that category. Thats why PSX games in general made me sad.

I would say that is not always the case. I don't like 7, 8 was alright (but not great...although the opening sequence to 8 was godlikle), but I did love 9, 10 10-2 and 11. As well as Grandia 2 and DW 7. I have a feeling I'm not the only one.

I enjoyed the most of FF series, but I would have to say that other than a few themes I've always felt the music was unimpressive. Most of the time I was just greatful that it wasn't overally annoying.
