I've never played Grandia, but the game's engine is heavily influenced by another PSX RPG: Xenogears. :) I've always been a sucker for sprites.
I'm glad we can agree to differ. :) I never had a problem with open source, I just don't approve of it. It's hardly my place to consider my opinion any better than somebody else's, though I do stand by what I believe in. :P What matters most is wether the end result is enjoyable to the end user or not. _________________ Endless Saga

It's sad to see a game that looks nice but that I may not get around to playing, unless maybe it happens to run under Wine. Sorry but I guess I am an open source zealot, I release everything under GPL, whatever the late-night hacking and neglected study. I consider closed source a waste of knowledge.
The newbie programmer "stealing" your efforts, that's at least as much bullshit as not getting support from the community. My biggest project right now is The Mana World, and the community is basically all we have.

On opensource, there is no real "immorality" at play. ...It just needs to be mixed in with capitalism a bit better.
The successful union of open-source software and capitalism will require a complex underlying economic system, a system much more intricate than either Nash's game theory or Smith's theory of capitalism. Perhaps combining the two with Alfred Keynes' work would be successful. (?)

Couple new screenshots.
I'm going to make a map editor out of the game engine instead of making those by hand from now on. Being currently on vacation, I can't really work on this until next week. But most bugs (minor as they were) picked up during the betatest have been corrected, and despite very satisfying performances (someone even got it to run on a 486, albeit at a terrible speed) massive speedups will be added to make the game engine more powerful. _________________ Endless Saga

Hehe, haven't touched this in a while.
For those interested, I'm adding a developement log to the website soon. I've already started it, but I won't update the website until the 8th (it's kind of a tradition; every update ended up being on the 8th so I just... stopped fighting it.)
I plan on logging the work I do in there, along with my thoughts and musings on the code. Might be an interesting read for some, and just yet another game developer's rantings for others. _________________ Endless Saga

Just thought I'd mention that the dev log's up. Nothing too serious in it yet though.
I think it was a good move. Now that I have a place to host the site (courtesy of Ninkazu), a new and less amateur website, and a devlog to keep a tab on my ideas, I feel more motivated to work on this than I have all of the past few months. To boot, my burned-down appartment is almost rebuilt, so I've been in a spiffy mood as of late.

Edit: Added a day/night system. A timer in-game keeps track of the elapsed time. 1 hour maps out to 1 day in-game.
"Yay! Purdy sunset!"

Well... just blogging a bit.
I've been doing some pretty important changes to the map engine, mainly going from quads to tris as a primary means of representing stuff (I knew I was going to have to eventually... this is what I get for being stubborn :) ) and the proper implementation of lighting.
I already have face shading (I'd post a screenshot but I'm at work; the latest news post on the ES boards has a screenshot though) but that's not good enough for me. But since face normals are required to calculate vertex normals (and thus to acheive smooth gourade (sp?) shading) I'm already part-way there. I can always just leave it in for people with lower-end specs, since it's less computational intensive for the video card (flat shading is constant along a polygone; smooth shading is interpolated for every pixel.)
Originally, every normal pointed straight up, which meant lighting was pretty much ambiant. Now? Well, hell, it's starting to look damned impressive. :)
Edit: Little screenshot I whipped up that shows off the surface normals (in red). The green is more or less a marker encoded in the map format.
Edit 2: It's No Explanation Picture Time!

The smooth shading will probably make a world of difference in terms of overall immersion in the game experience.

Tossed in support for backgrounds. Litterally, 5 minutes ago. The texture is a little blurry but it's a test texture anyways.
Note to self: get rid of that stupid christmas-themed sprite. Holidays done end months ago, foo'! _________________ Endless Saga

Sweet. That's the best screenshot so far. The skybox adds a lot. _________________ Visit the Sacraments web site to play the game and read articles about its development.
