I think this is actually a rather remarkable effort. It shows that the indie RPG scene is expanding in radical new directions, I think. People's efforts to extend existing gameplay engines are hitting critical mass. It's very interesting to see the evolution of Zelda Classic, because it's not running on a scripting engine. Soon it won't matter that it isn't, because it will have so many fundamental effects implemented that it will be possible to contrive just about anything within the constraints of the original Zelda engine just by replacing the item graphics. It's an alternative to scripting: nailing down everything within reach as a feature, until you reach the point where anything else you need can be derived by combining units of the simpler elements.

It seems to be intuitive and effective. I just played the "Zero Quest" level set last night, and I must say I will never see the original game the same way again.
