Recently, a study was done to find out what professionals believed was the best IDE. The results were not really surprising, but it really gives some insight as to how IDE development should continue for those who aren't "on top".
Not surprisingly, Microsoft's VS.net won on overall usage, with a total of 31.7%. Adobe/Macromedia Studio 8 came in second at 11.8%, and Eclipse tailing it by just 0.6%. In terms of overall rank, IBM's Rational Developer took top rank at 1386.0, with .net taking second place at 1309.8, followed by Borland Delphi at 1302.1. NetBeans and Eclipse were the lowest rated here. In terms of quality and size of developer community, .net won only by a slight margin over Eclipse.
Unfortunately, the full report costs $149 ($199 for non-participants in the study) so only the limited data was available to me. But regardless, this is still an interesting look at IDE usage in the professional sector of our industry. _________________ If you play a Microsoft CD backwards you can hear demonic voices. What version of VS was used for comparison? 2005 is a far cry better than 2003 was. (Course, that is not saying much: .NET 2.0 is far better than 1.1 was in any case.) _________________ "...LeoDraco is a pompus git..." -- Mandrake

Hmm, I'm missing IntelliJ IDEA, which I find absolutely stunning.
Oh, and where is vim?

- Eclipse is HAWT... but I have to use Visual Studio .NET at work... and I have to say... for what it's for, it's really good. It's got a lot of context help, and it fills in the blanks really quickly. Granted I'm learning .NET (no choice) so the context clues help a lot. _________________ - Jaeda

I've recently started using Visual Studio 2005 and I really like it a lot. It is definately a big improvement over Visual Studio 2003 and Visual Studio 6.

Yeah, my only complaint with 2k5 is that it has some performance issues. But then again, so does Eclipse :) Otherwise, I'm totally satisfied with it - it handles pretty much all my needs when working with C++ (though I think it could still use some further improvements to intellisense, and some good refactoring stuff...)

I haven't noticed any performance issues. Is there something specific that you're referring to?
Then again, I have a Xeon 2.8 Ghz processor with HyperThreading and 1 GB of ram, so I don't generally notice performance issues with any software.

But sometimes it just randomly locks up for a couple seconds while doing intellisense wackery as well.
