Alright. I didn't finish the demo for the contest - in fact, I didn't even come close. But I did finish something. You can get it here:
[Now that the contest is over, I've taken down the demo. Proper one will be out very soon.] _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

thought you might want to know how it ran for me:
it was slow, and the audio was super jerky
however, this is under WINE on my new Xubuntu distro.
I'll try it under real windows when I get a chance.
nice work.
oh, if you can build me an exe that uses a window, instead of fullscreen, it might run better. _________________ Principal Software Architect

There's a quick fix to that - open the config file and change refresh type to 1. If it's still not working well, I'll see what I can do about a windowed version... _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

Sweet! It ran fine for me, and I had fun playing it. A little short, but I'm quite eager to see what happens next. :)

Just got a chance to play. Nice game. Didn't run slow for me, though there were a few collision detection issues. Short, but interetesting:)

best of the compo games so far...or at least completed.. i found some bugs in all of the games but this one had the funniest one..
at the start of the game without going into the story press right key he will lose his legs..press left and he will become a priest....now if you press key up there will be a hot chick in his....ummm lol did he do that on purpose???
but still best engine of the games i downloaded...however witchhunt has much better plot.

No he didn't!
Cheers for playing it, both of you. :) _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

Echo, I'd like to congratulate you on your entry.
While it is quite short, and there are several bugs (like the one about the legs mentioned above) I found it to be the beginnings of an excellent rpg! I hope that you decide to complete it, because I certainly want to play the rest of the game. I'm intrigued. And the music is superb. At first I was like "too much fret noise.." then after I've replayed about 12 times the music has grown on me, and I find it very very nice, and it suits the game environment.
I really like the transparent textboxes (you gotta teach me that one man.)
To be honest, I really admire the simplistic yet convincing graphics style. Theres just enough detail to tell what is what, and its not "too busy" as alot of games are. All in all, I have to say that its a great demo. I wish it were longer though. FINISH IT MAN! :D _________________ Principal Software Architect

Wow, thanks for the compliments. :)
I was a bit nervous about releasing this, but I'm glad I did. It means a lot to have some positive feedback, especially at this early stage. There's nothing bad mentioned in any of the comments I've gotten that I can't easily fix, heh.
I'm going to finish the demo, at least, which, btw, is only going to be about an hour long, maybe less. I don't know about going much further than that - I'm still weighing up the pros and cons... _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

Thanks for the comment about the music, by the way. :) The fret noise thing was something I was concerned about, but at the same time it does add a bit of human feel that's rarely heard in music for games of this style. I am thinking of redoing a couple of the tunes anyway, so there might be less fret squeaking in those versions. The squeaks before the guitars come in in the battle theme weren't actually meant to be there, I just forgot to remove them, so sorry about those. :P
