And DevX, Mandrake, and everyone else who encouraged and helped me to get SDL.
Thanks to you, I have now acheived in one day what has eluded me for the past year and a half.
I have created a fullscreen window, placed a sprite on it, and am able to move it around.
WITH TRANSPARENCY.
THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU!

Ah yes, but do you know how that's done? That's the real accomplishment.

You are quite welcome.
And, goodluck with the rest of your journey of learning game programming. :)
I've recently started using pygame (which wraps SDL in nice n easy python) and I have to say, I'm loving every minute of it! :D
My goal is an old-school tile based rpg engine by the end of May.
:) ..anyone here had experience with pygame and would like to join me, let me know. _________________ Principal Software Architect

Hello all.
I've been reading this forum for a while and though I'd take this opportunity to introduce myself by jumping on the SDL/pygame bandwagon. I've been tinkering with pygame off and on for about a year and it certainly does make life a lot easier. Their documentation is pretty decent too, which always helps. I've found pygame to be a nice tool for learning the ins and outs of making sprite-based games.

Heya Scrim. Nice avatar!
I've never tried pygame - Mandrake's experiences with it back in the day sorta put me off even trying it. Everything else I've heard about it has been just lovely, though.
Congrats on getting SDL to work, Maestro. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with. _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

It's true, speed is definitely the biggest issue with pygame; it forces you to be clever about your screen draws. I'm not an expert but I do have a demo with 10 or so animated sprites running over a big map at 45 fps on my 3-year-old powerbook. On the other hand, I also managed to create a simple text display widget that dragged things down to 10 FPS because I accidentally had it regenerating itself every frame.
Personally, I'm more interested in turn-based games with fewer things whizzing around the screen so I think I can make it work for me.

Projects, hmmm. I am always starting things and not finishing them; I either lose interest or feature-creep myself to death.
I'm trying to be more disciplined about my current weekend project - an "old school" party-based RPG engine - but who knows how far I'll get. If it starts to look like I might actually produce something playable, I'll post some info about it here on rpgdx.

THE SYSTEM WORKETH
Now I'm trying to get it to where I can handle key presses without getting weird "expected ; or type conversion before ) character" errors where I can see nothing of the kind. _________________ "Sometimes it is better to light a flamethrower than to curse the darkness."
