Remember also to add a SLEEP (sleep 1 or something so your prog doesn't hog the processor) in your main loop and perhaps SCREENSYNC too. _________________

1. DeveloperX, i tried running the 3rd part of ur code. The window opens and then it crashes. I have the needed dll.
|
Send me the source code you are using to ccpsceo@gmail.com and I will help.
I've not had anything crash. So, perhaps you're missing something. _________________ Principal Software Architect

interesting. I created 3 tile graphics (since your zip doesn't have them)
and then ran the exe using wine in linux, and it ran rather nicely.
slow, but smooth scrolling. very little flicker at all. _________________ Principal Software Architect

Hmm, looks like you lot've got the programming bits sorted. Let me know when you start designing the game, then I'll join in :) _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

Hey DeveloperX.... ur code does work.... I compiled it again.. Thanks.. and it does look good....
Well, ya i suppose the flickr isnt there in the code, but it is still not perfect,,, coz the player does not move to the edge of the screen ... or the player moves out the screen... :(
Hey Echo.. I dont think i have still managed the tile engine as yet... need to get it work perfect... am doing a lot of reading for this... all this stuff about windows, x, y and camera's is making me kinda crazy... :)
Have thought of two levels for the game so far...
I want to get the engine ready... to handle proper player movement, collison and stuff... then its time to move up...
BTW, GRAPHICS... i created a small 32x32 tile for the NPC... gave it a green backdrop... but this backdrop shows against the grass instead of just the player outline.. any quick tips.. or shud i paste in the other board

Haven't had time to check the code to deeply as I got sick yesterday but I noticed that you draw your hero incode. Make him in a bmp as your other graphics. _________________

Yeah, i have done that.. the hero is now a bmp... and he SUCKS...
I have started the code from scratch... and the tile engine scrolling is crappy now...
Here is the uploaded source....
An example of how things can go wrong... :(

Hey Thanks Echo...
Just want to get a good grip on the tile system.. I think i mite have to stick with a good engine, instead of preparing one manually...
I spent atleast 3 hours yesterday trying to figure out how the tiles fit on the screen and stuff, how to scroll the tiles... and the end result ended in some horrible code which didnt work.
After that I used some pseudo code from some tutorial, that didnt work perfect either.. ma hero moves out of the screen. :(
Looks like I have a long way to go to make a simple game...

The main hero of this game is a young lad know as Jadd. If anyone wants to design the sprite for him, please feel free. Jadd is about 18-20 years old, an orphan. He works on the street as a shoe polisher.
His hometown...
Its in the 17th Century, a typical European city called Nermer. So we have some castles, a few inns, few farms, etc....
The city of Nermer has a huge coastline wherein plenty of ships dock. Its a trading port.
Here is the start of the story....
Our hero is wandering about in his hometown after a bad day at work. He has not made any money today and is feeling hungry. He walks into an inn and asks for food, but is refused. He then steals an apple/ or some money from one of tables. He is then chased around the town.
The aim of the first level:
1. Avoid getting caught by the townsfolk.
2. Find a crate to hide in.
Simple isnt it? Ah.. but wait the story progresses.... Will keep u guys posted on this...

Yeah, I like it :)
I think we need to get the basics down before we start designing levels though - like what resolution the game's going to run at, for example... That sorta thing.
On the subject of engines, have you considered RPG Maker? Or OHRRPGCE? _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

In all respects, using RPG Maker would indeed allow us to build the game faster, to be able to concentrate on the content, not the engine.
However, I think dbest is looking to produce his own engine if I'm not mistaken.
On another note;
I've have started work on a smooth-scrolling tile engine using freebasic & allegro. I'm liking how it is turning out so far.
Man freebasic makes things so much nicer, heh..(I started my programming with BASIC, and how funny it is that now I'm able to once again utilize my real skills again and cross-platform to boot! :D) _________________ Principal Software Architect
