PostPosted: Mon Oct 08, 2007 2:05 am    Post subject: Mysterious Song Remake - Demo Version [quote]

Frozen Utopia has released a special free preview version of the Mysterious Song remake for the PC Engine.

http://www.frozenutopia.com/msrdemo.rar

INSTRUCTIONS:
-Download and unrar.
-Run "unpack.bat" to decompress the audio files.
-Burn to CDROM or run the cuesheet directly in Mednafen.

It will play on real hardware, but there will be snow issues during fades...it's not a huge problem but if that kind of thing bugs you, it will bug you here. Don't play in Magic Engine, as the game uses some techniques that Magic Engine doesn't support (well, you CAN play it in Magic Engine, but some parts won't look right). I do all testing in Mednafen 0.7.2, it plays it perfectly.

Umm... This Mednafen thing is way too much trouble, for me at least. Maybe it's just cause I'm not a coder like the rest of you, I dunno. :p After trying the latest version and not having a fucking clue what was going on with that (wouldn't start, not even from the command line following every instruction I was told, and the txt it spit back out didn't tell me much), I tried an older version (8.1, then 6.5 when that didn't work), and it always gives me this in the 'stdout' txt:

Starting Mednafen 0.6.5
Loading settings from "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\Mednafen\mednafen.cfg"...
Setting "vdriver" is not set to a valid unsigned integer: "opengl"

Nothing I do changes anything. I miss being able to actually run something out of the box without jumping through a bunch of incomprehensible hoops first... Chances are I'm missing something blatantly obvious, as I usually am, but I have no clue right now.

Okay, I changed the vdriver option in mednafen.cfg to 1 for SDL, and now it comes up...but the audio is VERY choppy..and I don't know the controls to navigate...Enter apparently is RUN, but...other than that I don't know.

I'm still working on figuring it out..I'll post more once I get further.

Okay, I got it working; it runs great on dual 3.8 Ghz CPUs...but horrid on 700Mhz.

*sits down to play through it*

I finally got it running ^_^. Had to search quite awhile to find a download for syscard3.pce (http://thedump.classicgaming.gamespy.com/tg16/) and then figure out how that awful (Awful!) cfg file worked.
Haven't played to long into the game yet. Gonna get back tomorrow about it :).

Damn, that emulator is painful to use :(

I eventually got it working though - for anyone who cares, here's what I had to do (hope this helps, Josiah):

* Open the configuration file and change the "vdriver" variable from "opengl" to "sdl".
* Find a copy of that cd bios (thanks BadMrBox!)
* Setup the emulator to use it (at cmd: mednafen -pce.cdbios syscard3.pce)
* To run it, you can just drag and drop the cue file onto mednafen.exe
* You then need to setup the controller: Press ALT+SHIFT+1 to modify the keys of controller 1. You'll have to confirm each key more than once. The only buttons you actually need are called "Select", "Run", "I" and "II", so you can map the others to whatever random keys you like.

That should do it.

Well, it's very nice - congrats :) I can appreciate the technical feat of getting something like this to work on a TurboGrafx, and it's really cool from that perspective. But I'd forgotten what a grindfest this game is...

Emphasis on "and again", huh? Relax, man, you ask that everytime Nod posts about this, heh.

Are you still counting on me for that Japanese translation or do you have a real Japanese person on it now? I still have the document to continue if you're not in a hurry to have it done.

Terry: Nope, still nothing. Followed every step, double-checked each one... The command prompt still just acts as if I hadn't typed anything and hit enter. No error, nothing-- same thing when I just run the exe from windows. This is way more trouble than it's worth... How does anyone manage to use this thing more than once without going insane? :(

~Josiah

EDIT: Okay, finally got it working. Um... I would suggest tweaking the 'balanced' version of the game quite a bit, though. So far I've died four times without even reaching Fawna, and had to sit through the entire first section of the game again (thankfully the intro can be skipped, though). I don't know about anyone else here, but personally, I don't think any game should play like that.

...Finally made it, on the 6th try. :p

The game is just about finished, this demo is just basically a "teaser" of how it plays and whatnot.

I know mednafen isn't the most user-friendly emulator to use, but it is the most accurate and that's why we use it. There are other PC Engine emulators out there that you can use, but most will require you to either have a working CDROM of the game or a virtual CDROM driver installed. Hu-Go! is pretty good and is cross-platform.

As for the Japanese translation...we decided to drop most of the translations due to lack of interest. The game is playable in English and Spanish only.

Chill down DevX. Nod has told you several times that you will be in the credits and I'm sure you will be.

Josiah, you did buy the sword at the castle I hope? If you did, it shouldn't be too difficult to get to Fawna. :P
