Are there any RPG engines that are out there that are particulary good, done, and made for the purpose of being used by the public?
I looked at the engines in the ENGINE section, but none of them were done (one was a broken link). You all probably make your own. hmmph.

actually, there are quite a few. I don't know tha pages off-hand, but some people here might. OHR-RPGCE, SPHERE, RPGMaker95, RPGMaker2k are all nice from what I hear. GameMaker is anther good one. Might want to ask the chaps at pixelation for more help, there are a lot of engine-users there: http://pixelation.swoo.net

thank'ee janus, but i would urge people to stay away from using verge, it's latest incarnation uses C# and requires people who want to play your games to download a huge-ass interpreter that would take hours to download. In a visual RPG Maker, this is understandable, ina low-level script based environment, this a travesty. Does anyone still understand the idea of elegence in a design? sigh.

Actually, it's really elegant, there's just the issue of downloading the .NET RTL. C# itself is a great choice, and re-use is a good thing. V1 & V2 used custom C interpeters that had a lot of bugs and lacked a lot of features - C# provides everything someone could possibly need to do in Verge. The runtime is a big downside, but everyone's going to have it in a few years anyway (by the time V3 comes out). V2 is pretty cool, if you don't mind scripting and simplicity. Personally, I'd stick with Sphere or GameDev (I had a hand in GameDev's original creation, and know the developer well -he's a great guy, Sphere is a great piece of work too). With Sphere, you can take the source (GPL), modify it, and have yourself a great customized engine.
Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot to tell ya... RM2k and RM95 are illegal ;)

well, they could have easily have use lua (http://lua.org ) or python, or any number of free, open-source small memory finger print (and no huge ass interpreter dloads) that are far better than C#.
Not too mention the legality of using C#.

You don't like C# much, do you? :P
C# is free and open. It's an ECMA standard. :P

ohhh! well, if it's an ECMA standard!
ha...sorry, anyway, no i don't like C#, and I really want to see the EULA people have to agree to before dlaoding and using the RTP. i doubt it's as "free" as it could be (free as in free speech mind you).
Not too mention it's bloated, sad wannabe replacement for java. I just don't like it. at all. they could've used hundreds of diffrent free, better scripting engines.

It's not much of an issue anyway, Verge's been dead for like 2 years ;)
