PostPosted: Tue Sep 24, 2002 7:29 pm    Post subject: major site changes to RPGDX [quote]

hopefully by the end of this weekend/next weekend you will see an entirely new RPGDX. All of your games and login info should pretty much stay exactly the same.

One of the main changes is dropping this Message board for one that is integrated into the site, so that uses only need to log in once. What this means is that anyone who only has an account with this board, and not with RPGDX itself will need to create a new login and password.

Other than that, everything else should be (your data anyway) unchanged. Changes that will be made to the site:

as stated above, a new message board.
the ability to have unlimited screenshots (rather than three).
avatars on news postings.
personal messages that can be accessed anywhere within the site.
groups will be implemented, so that when one or more people are working on a game, more than one can change it.
multiple downloads (so if a game has a windows version, or a mac version, or a linux version, or a gba version, all versions can be found here).
each person can now do blod style rants.
a random screenshot.
each person can also "track" the amount veiws to there game and the number of downloads they receive.
group avatars.
logo's will be re-instated.
game layout will be just as clean and easy on the eyes as the current layout (unlike the first RPGDX layout).
off-site links that users can add/edit.
a utility section for users to to/edit.
a better way of doing articles.
a better way of doing reveiws.
integrated contests and compo's.
when people win a compo, they get an award image which is automitically displayed next to there message board posts/news postings
a page for the MIRC room.
random screenshot.

and much more.

anyway, since this is going down, is there any suggestions out there to improve the site by?

How is this going to affect the other messageboards such as the Abstract Productions one?

I'd also suggest saving the data from this board, archiving it at least, so it's always there to refer to...

...and set everyone on the new board to their current post counts, heh. I've worked for a few months on this baby. ;)

ok, hosted boards will have a choice, switch over to the new baord format (which can easily be skinned for each diffrent board, so we could have Xmark's board fit his site, and the RPGDX board fit RPGDX) or keep the one that's there. This board will still be up, but locked, so no one can post to it (for archival purposes only).

I'll try and move post counts over, but i can't promise anything. I'll try and keep post counts and avatars the same, but passwords will be done using your RPGDX password and not your RPGDX message board password, so those who only have accounts on the message board will lose everything. So, if you are only signed upto the message board, sign up for an RPGDX account before Sunday of this week.

Uhm, Mandrake... a few months ago I have merged the user tables of this messsage board and the RPGDX users. So nobody should be losing any account or have to sign up for a new one.

And, though I don't know anything about your new board yet, I'd like to look into converting the topics and posts from this board into the new one. Moving post counts over should be trivial.

Well, post counts shouldn't be a problem... just make a note of what everyone is at, and set them to that on the new board.

Archiving what we've got here already will be a bit more time consuming... at least, in the sense of html-izing it so that it's properly readable away from the board.

you mean all 167 posters?

heh. there is an easier way than jotting it down (heh for loops are wonderfull :)) don't worry about post counts. Avatars might have to change though. Long story. But it's for the better....much much better.
