Our entry from the November Contest is now a "complete" game! It's still quite short, but now features a complete adventure and a few gameplay tweaks.

You can download the Windows and Mac versions here:

http://scrimisms.com/soscarides/

I'm slightly less confident that the windows version works properly, but I think most of the bugs are dead.

I'm really glad RPGDX (especially Terry) organized the weekend contest. Without it I never would have made this game and would probably still be sitting around thinking "gee, when am I ever going to actually finish anything?"

Hey, congratulations! I should have a bit of free time tomorrow evening, so I'll give it a try then!

I'm downloading it and hopes to give it a shot sometime this week ^^

Edit: I tried it right away. I'm sorry to say that I have still the same trouble moving the character around.
When starting a new game the character can move just a few pixels too either directions on the island. I can enter the temple but then I cannot see the character anymore... however I managed to talk to the old wise man still.
If I choose new game from the main menu when I have already played the character starts god knows where. Guess you have forgotten to reset the characters x/y values.
I think that the collisions and the maplayer is out off sync. However why I can't see the character in the temple is a good question. Anyone else on Vista having the same problems as me?

just thought you should know that you have a typo in your manual PDF.

You say that you made the game in November 2008...whereas that should read 2007. ;)

About to try the game..I'll let you know

Works well on Vista for me.

I was impressed with the smooth movement that the game has. The graphics are very pixelated, and can do with a boost. The first battle didnt work out in my favor. So i quit the game. Thats how i play ma games.

Will look at playing it once again... :)

I dont understand how it dont run ok for me as it does so for others. After awhile I managed to get into the boat but eh... it's buggy. Sometime the charactersprite shows on land when I in fact are in the boat trying to sail - and that doesn't work well. It also seems like the collisionlayer changes during I walking/sailing O_O

Try turning off all vista themes, and using a resolution like 1024x768, also, turn off anything else that could be running in the background interfering. I recommend killing your net connection while playing, so you can turn off any virus checkers/firewalls/anti spyware/etc

I'm running Vista Home Premium, and it runs perfectly.
I have no themes (running in windows classic), I also run it with windows xp compatibility mode (right click exe, choose compatibility, then pick windows xp)

just finished the game!
that was sooo much fun :)
congratulations Scrim!
with better artwork (not that it wasn't good) you would have one seriously nice game on your hands.

If you ever want to revamp the graphics, let me know. I'm a pretty decent tile artist (you need someone else to draw the characters though)

I'm running it in 1024x768 res and have tried it with XP compability too. I haven't shut down the net or my virus prog/spyware neither changed to classic. I can't see how this should affect the gameplay logically but I can always try. I wanna be able to play this.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

BMB, do you happen to have pygame installed on your machine? I wonder if maybe the game is finding the natively installed one instead of the bundled one and the versions are incompatible? It's about the only thing I can think of that might account for the odd drawing behavior, but it's really just a wild guess.

I don't think disabling your net connection would make any difference. I'll have to read up a bit on pygame and see what kinds of problems other people have run into with it, maybe there's some fix.

I can't remember if I have installed pygame before. I did however install some python stuff a long time ago, perhaps I installed pygame too.
