So we can make graphics beforehand? It's just the actual map design, dialogue, etc. that has to be made during the jam?

Hey, be glad I didn't throw in a snarky comment. |
And that I didn't do something completely n00bish and/or make an apparently nonsensical comment. _________________ "Sometimes it is better to light a flamethrower than to curse the darkness."

So I've decided to make an entry for the contest. I've got the whole low grade graphics thing down. I'm trying to approximate the look of graphics generated by the Sega Master System. So for sound I've decided to go with midi for music, and am trying to get together midis that sound older even through wave table. Would this approach be adequate for music? _________________ Life is what happens while you're waiting for the stress to subside...

Personally I'd say avoid midis unless you are pre-rendering them out to waveform data streams first.
Midis sound different on each computer.
If you want to use midi, then export your midi compositions to a wav and then encode the wav to an mp3 or an ogg or something that is waveform data that will sound the same on any system you play on.
I'm not going to have audio in my entry because there simply isn't enough time to create the audio files, and draw the tiles, and create maps, and write dialogue, and create game events, and test balance, ...*yikes..must get back to work on the engine...* _________________ Principal Software Architect

Actually I had thought of recording my midis to wav format then converting to mp3 but then it's an issue of file size... I suppose I could play with the file quality to get the file size down. _________________ Life is what happens while you're waiting for the stress to subside...

Since its for a lo-fi game, you could render them as 8-bit wavs XD
And why would file size be an issue in this day and age?
Need Hosting space to store your game download?
I can spare some space if that is the case. _________________ Principal Software Architect

best of luck to all the entries, I think I'll sit back and watch, I don't have the discipline for making a rpg in 2 days. _________________ pixoasis /The Search For... /K9

I'll watch with astonishment as usual. If I do something, it usually stretches weeks and months. A timeframe of 48 hours looks way too short to even start - yet you guys make complete games in such a time. I admire you all for that :)

okay, well, I'm in :) (and, hey guys)
I've been meaning to do something rpgish for a while. I'm going to do a warmup rpg this weekend (anyone else up for it? :) ), and hopefully I'll have thought of something decent for next week.
I'll probably keep everything within the 48-hour slot; I have several other projects that keep me busy at other times...
Looking forward to this :)
