This is the thread for Ham Sandwich RPG: The Adventures of Ham Hamilton, my entry into the summer competition. We'll see how far I get before I have to call it quits tonight. In the meantime, here are a few screenshots:
I planned a bunch of this game out in advance, so development has been fairly smooth so far. I can't claim it'll be a very long game, but it's pretty fun, I think. :) I also have a partner, the talented Tyler Schmahl, helping me out by producing music, so this is technically a collaborative entry.

Phew! I'm almost done--adding in Tyler's sounds and music right now. I've managed to squeeze a proper ending in there (albeit one that's a wee bit of a cop-out). There's a special guest villain in there as well, whom you'll get to meet if you reach the end. ;)

Here is the download for the latest version:
http://www.sinisterdesign.net/Downloads/HamSandwichRPG.air
Arrow keys move (up jumps and down kneels); X does everything that the arrow keys don't, including attacking once you find yourself a weapon.
The game is essentially complete. All it's missing is boss music and a few sound effects from Tyler, which I'll add in later. This is an Adobe Air file, so it should run under Windows, Mac, and Linux. However, you have to nab Adobe AIR first if you don't already have it!

This was nice, but a bit difficult - I didn't manage to finish it before I gave up. The double jump works well, but I would've liked to be able to attack the monsters too.. _________________ www.mattiasgustavsson.com - My blog

You can (and in fact, have to) attack the monsters. You just have to find the toothpick-blade first. :)

I was able to retrieve the toothpick blade. It is fortunate that the rats don't turn around when you hit them otherwise the game might have been much more difficult.
There were two things that I found mildy frustrating, but also added to the charm of the game:- Bouncing when you collide with the walls
- Moving forward when you swing the toothpick blade (which caused me to get hit frequently)
Overall the game was fun and the music was good; however, I encountered an error in the game after fighting Brushetta, the giant rat, which caused my character to continuously fall through the floor. Leaving the game in an unplayable state (even after clicking "Try Again"). The error caused my character to continuously die.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad you liked it. :)
I've seen players fall through the floor on very rare occasions since I released this, but never continuously like that. How did it happen? Did the boss rat push you inside a wall?
(BTW, the moving forward on the upswing can actually be really useful if you use it properly--you just have to always attack from behind.)

I'm not sure exactly what happened. I think we killed each other at the same time as he pushed me into the left wall.
When I clicked "Try Again" the giant rat was dead and my character was standing to the right of the rat's body, next to another character, and the passage was open.
Then another copy of my character fell from the top of the screen to the bottom and died. This created an infinite loop of death each time I clicked "Try Again" as my character fell off the screen again and again. Pressing left and right moved the falling character, but did not prevent the character from dying or falling through the floor.

The plot and level design aren't bad for a 48 hour game, but I swear I spent more time fighting the user interface than I spent fighting the monsters. Bouncing between two walls (or one wall and one monster) = pain. At least if it's a monster, you die eventually and get to try again.
Also, the room with the weapon runs painfully slowly on my computer.

Okay, weird; I bet it's because you died at the exact same time as the rat. I think I even know why that happened. :) Maybe I'll go and fix that at some point; I can't imagine it happens all that often, though.

That is by far one of the best short action games I've ever played!
Congratulations man.
I love the graphics, the story, the controls, the ai, the audio.
You've got to finish this into a full game!
I sooo want to keep playing!
More environments! More Enemies! More kick ass story!
:D
(btw, I ran the exe successfully using WINE in Linux)
also..the FPS that I got was excellent!
No slow downs whatsoever.
