I've got no problem with anybody - even a millionaire - trying to fund a project with Kickstarter. What was ridiculous about this one was the fact that the guy is a nobody with nothing to bring to the table to make thing project a reality... OTHER THAN MONEY.
Pony up and make a frickin' proof-of-concept, and hire some friggin' artists to do concept art instead of ripping off book covers. And narrow your concept, because nobody believes that you can make a game that's got a bigger scope than all of these games (with 8 or 9 digit budgets) combined. Ain't gonna happen, and he's parading his ignorance for all to see.
He claims he wants to use it to gauge interest? Look, if you don't have enough interest and passion YOURSELF for this project to get the ball rolling as far as you can on your own, then how do you expect anybody else to do so? Making games is not like making pizza!
Wasteland 2 is up over a million dollars in under three days? Why? Because most of the variables are removed with an experienced dev team & property (these are some of the same guys that made the original, and they've not been resting on their laurels in the meantime). Double Fine took 3.3 million. Why? Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert. And a long legacy of excellent games.
I don't think I could get $4k out of kickstarter. And ... well, I'm not entirely an unknown. I hung out for a weekend with Ron Gilbert in Las Vegas at a company technical leadership summit once when we all belonged to GT Interactive, does that count?
I think Kickstarter and related "customer-funded" sites are extremely cool... in a way, kind of a modern take on the "patronage" system for the arts. And I believe in a fully capitalist, democratic system where anybody can try something like this. I don't believe anything should stop him from trying. But I think this guy's story should be paraded around just as much as Double Fine Adventure and Wasteland 2, just to show people that Kickstarter is not an ATM. _________________ Tales of the Rampant Coyote - Old-School Game Developer talks Indie Games, RPGs, and the Games Biz

Yeah it's one thing to have a tech demo or at least some concept art up there, but this guy he's got a big wall of text on the front page. He does have some screenshots on the updates page, but I would still put at least something on the front page.
He has like $10,000 on there, so some people believe in his dream. That's great. If he can take that and deliver something that's totally rad, but personally I would not even think about doing a Kickstarter until I had a solid tech demo. _________________ Mao Mao Games

He has millions of dollars to spend.
He reminds me of the queen in FFIX: loud, excesssive, and vapid.
Kinda like George Broussard.
