Game crash. Definitely.

Why? Too many kilowatt hours will eat into gamers' pocketbooks. This will force consolidation in the industry and a decline in games produced.

In my opinion Microsoft is walking on a very thin line with the xbone. And I'm not talking about the machine costs $100 more than the ps4 and is weaker but microtransactions. Well, in terms of Forza motorsport it's not micro but macrotransactions.
Some cars costs more than the fullpriced game itself apparently...

There's talk that PS5 won't even be a console, but an online service. Honestly I don't understand why there would even be need for a PS5. The PS4 is already overkill... they could have upgraded the RAM and called it a day, instead of pushing this 8-cell monstrosity. But if they'd done that, I guess OUYA would have caught up. Overall I expect the game industry to shuffle majorly over the next few years. I wouldn't be surprised if PS4 failed, especially if OUYA or Steam push hard.

The Ouya is completely dead in the water and the PS4 is the fastest selling console in the history so I dont know about that. I'm unsure if they will gamble on making any new versions of Ouya.
I'm not sure what to make of valve and their Steambox...

It is my understanding that any of the cars can be earned, but players that are impatient (or unskilled) can purchase the high-end cars immediately.

Oh yes. But it's a matter of balance. It's rather easy for the developer to up the requirements to unlock stuff when microtransactions are involved.

It seems like consoles are so PC-like that they don't even really have a reason to exist as separate from PCs. Just about every game gets multi-platform releases except in cases where they are limited to one console purely for marketing reasons rather than technical reasons. And since both consoles now share similar hardware (which is itself similar to PC hardware) there's even less reasons to go single-platform.

I find the idea of Steam Machines quite interesting mostly because of their choice of a Linux-based OS. One major thing preventing gamers from using Linux PCs is the fact that almost no games get ported to Linux. If Steam Machines take off, then Linux machines will become viable gaming machines (whether they're actual Steam Machines or not).

Developing for a Steam Machine would mean dropping DirectX and using OpenGL only, which could be a major obstacle to game support on Steam Machines, though I think OpenGL's technical capabilities are about the same anyways.

Nintendo is suffering because they're losing their casual gamer market to mobile devices (as well as confusion between Wii and Wii U, and even competition from their own 3DS)

If the hardcore market sticks with PC and/or Steam Machines then this may be the last "console generation". In fact, I think this generation may end up not being defined by the consoles but by the comeback of virtual reality (which will start with the release of the Oculus Rift probably later this year). That may be a bit of wild guess though, maybe we're still not ready for VR.

But, who really still needs to drop DirectX anyway? Only those who were for whatever reason solely targeting Windows and Xbox, right? For anything else you need an OpenGL or OpenGL-like pipeline already I think.

Unfortunately, at work I'm working on a game that will target only Windows and is done based on DirectX. This is mainly since the project started back in 2011 when this was probably acceptable, and the in-house expertise was pretty much DirectX only. I just hope that market is still big enough by the time this game is expected to make money.

Edit: Oh, and about the prediction that it will crash, I had expected this myself as well. But I think that clearly this is not the case. For whatever reason a lot of people jumped on this generation of consoles like never before. Still not interested myself though...

This will definitely be the last generation. Power costs are already like 200w + TV. Triple/Quadruple the power and you're looking at 500+w then TV... you're in range of a fire. By the same token, you should start taking a hard look at your rig before upgrading it... maybe even put in on a different breaker.

This may be helpful, Valve have released their DirectX to OpenGL wrapper from DOTA2.
