Call me curious, "okay, curious", but I just wanna know what sort of stuff you folks listen to. Name your favourite bands, genres, albums, etc, etc... maybe write a small blurb about 'em, or why you like that particular style/band/album. I'll go first.
My Dying Bride - wonderful doom/death metal, with gothic and classical influences. Emotional, and majestic music.
Until Death Overtakes Me - suffocating, epic funeral doom... almost drone like at some points... very creepy music, but it takes a lot of patience to truly enjoy.
HIM - cheesy, poppy "love metal"... europe's version of Britney Spears, but with guitars instead. It's very manufactured, extremely cliche, and predicatable music... but for some reason, I really like it. I can't figure out why, so I just enjoy the music.
Nirvana - Yep, I've been a fan ever since early '89. The Love Buzz single hooked me, and Bleach truly blew me away. Still my favourite album by them... I think perhaps, because it's very sludgy, and doomy. Indeed, some of the tracks could certainly be mistaken for sludge rock/metal.
Leonard Cohen - what a voice! I've always enjoyed Cohen's music. It's so... so... depressing. :) ...and his lyrics are really wonderful, and witty as well. A joy to listen to.
Okay folks, your turn... discuss, heh. _________________ "Goth is a way for ugly people to be interesting."

Summoning. Epic Tolkien-inspired fantasy metal.
Autumn Tears. Neo-classical keyboard music with female vocals. Incredibly dark yet delicate.
Bathory (viking era). Viking metal. A musical tribute to a time long gone. "One Rode to Asa Bay" is the one of the saddest songs I know.
Burzum. Ambient black metal.
Immortal. Fast and furious yet melodic black metal. The musical expression of a blizzard.
Katatonia. Doom metal with amazing harmonies.
Gary Stadler. New-agey keyboard music.
Heidenreich. "Avant-garde" black metal.

Heh, I actually started listening to My Dying Bride after reading one of your Game Rants (or whatever they were called) on the Darkness Ethereal website. Really like them.
Other than that:
Blind Guardian - THE power metal band of the century. From Germany, but sings in english, many songs are inspired by Tolkien and other fantasy. I pity anyone who hasn't listened through their album Nightfall in Middle-Earth.
In Flames - Swedish heavy metal band. Heavy stuff.
Iron Maiden - Don't need an introcuction, do they?
Sonata Arctica - Finnish band. They're playing some kind of metal, but which kind of metal I can't decide.
Rammstein - More German metal.
Nightwish - Kind of hard to describe... Mix metal with opera and throw in a female singer, and you have Nightwish.[/quote] _________________ http://www.weeaboo.se

Nirvana is the only real band I listen to (just because I was curious after reading game rants on DE :P)
Apart from them, I listen to:
Nobuo Uematsu
Matt Uelman
Masami Ueda
Yasunori Mitsuda
Aki Kuroda
and..... I think that's it.
Aki Kuroda just did the piano versions of FFX's music, but they're awesome. Not too much of Masami Ueda, but Resident Evil still had some good music. Matt Uelman is keeping Blizzard alive :P

I guess I forgot Nobuo Uematsu and Yasunori Mitsuda... Only metal in my playlist right now, so I guess it's understandable. _________________ http://www.weeaboo.se

People say I'm stuck in the past; well, yeah, they're right. My music knowledge isn't as cultured (meaning esoteric, I guess) as I'd like, but here goes:
- The Velvet Underground - Late 60s American band. The leaf-sheet that came with the CD calls them "minimalist rock and roll" and I guess that describes them just about as well as I could. Probably my favourite band.
- Them - Irish band, mid 60s. Rootsy sort of rock and roll, blues influence. They wrote a lot of songs you've heard covered by other bands.
- Other Standard 60s Bands - Hendrix, Dylan, the Beatles, Cream, blah, blah, blah. Oh, and yes, Leonard Cohen's great (and CanCon!).
- Radiohead - Favourite modern band. Don't think I have to describe them.
- Sonic Youth - Another modern band I like. They always struck me as a cross between the Velvet Underground and Nirvana, but most people say I'm insane.
- Anything non-orchestral by Franz Liszt. One of the few Classical composers/arrangers I like.
And that's about it.

Chalk me up for these two. I got hooked on Lenord Cohen after reading a book of his, and then couldn't stop. He's up there with Dylan on my list of "Guys with cool voices that I wish I could be".

Wow, finally, someone else who digs Sonic Youth. Except I would call them more of a cross between Velvet UNderground and the televisions (for their earlier stuff), and more nirvana-ish in their post Dirty stuff...but then again, Nirvana played a huge influence on their later music. Except Sonic Youth does it better. Has to be my favorite band of all time....
but right now I'm listening more towards electronica...blah blah, blah blah _________________ "Well, last time I flicked on a lighter, I'm pretty sure I didn't create a black hole."-

The last three cds I've listened to:
-some Trance compo cd'
-70's Funk compo cd
-sevendust newest cd
I used to really like death metal, but I could never find anything for sale (this was pre internet days) So the only goth rock I've heard is Type O Negative which I used to dig on quiet a bit. I've mostly moved away from rock and now i listen to trance/dance techno and some funk/disco.
Also, I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for 80's hair bands (woohoo, skid row! Poison! ac/dc, kiss, judas priest, megadeth, dokken, oh yeah, Cinderalla! well, maybe judas priest and acdc aren't hair bands... Anyone remember a band called Accept?) and 90's alternative (Janes addiction and smashing pumpking, soundgardern, breeders, a bazillion one hit wonder types...)

I mostly listen to metal (Sepultura, Nevermore, Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Testament, Slayer, etc.), but sometimes I'll pull some other stuff out, too, depending on my mood.
Non-metal CD's I've listened to lately include Ottmar Liebert / Luna Negra (flamenco and classical guitar), Vivaldi (classical), Brian Setzer Orchestra (swing), Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (more swing), and Rob Zombie (industrial dance).
I'm also partial to soundtrack-like things when I want something that fades into the background. Mostly, this is horror-themed soundtracks, like Burton's "Sleepy Hollow" or Danzig's "Black Aria", since I am such a sucker for anything horror-related. As a dark ride fan and amateur house haunter, I'll listen to things like Midnight Syndicate (whose music is often used for amateur haunted houses) and special-interest CD's like the Disney Haunted Mansion 30th Anniversary CD to get inspired for my upcoming October projects.
Of course, since the compo theme was nostalgia, I cracked open the Myst soundtrack yesterday, just so I could hear that distinctive opening theme again...

I mostly listen to metal and game soundtracks. Often times influenced by what kind of art I'm doing.
Metal:
Dissection: Probably my favorite band if I had to choose one. Mid paced melodic death/black metal stuff. Pretty and cold. The band that REALLY got me into metal. Nostalgic value I guess.
In Flames: Melodic death metal again. Nice folky influence. Though everything after thier "Colony" CD sucks ass and I will not waste money going to any more of thier shows.
Bal Sagoth: Death metal for dorks. Sci-fi/Fantasy themes. Lots of synth trumpets and stuff. Only the latest 2 CDs are any good though.
Therion: Heavy metal + choir + various orchestral instrumentation
Game music:
Jeremy Soule is probably my favorite composer here.
Others include Matt Uelman, Michael Giacchino, Kevin Manthei, Barry Leitch for his repetitive but nice Drakan soundtrack.
Pixelation is down, thus my visit to the RPGDX forums. :oP
anyone know whats goin on over there? I need my pixel fix arrghh!

Probably going to completely alienate myself here by the sounds of everyone elses posts, but... I hate metal, never could understand the attraction... I like my Techno and Top 40 crap :/ Then again you prolly say that same about that... Shrugs...
Looking through my most recently opened files, it looks something like this:
The Mavis's - Cry
Matt Darey - Pure Euphoria
Fastball - Outta My Head
Fatboy Slim - Soul Surfing
Nalin & Kane - Beachball
Paul Oakenfold - Skydive
Ministry Of Sound - The Chillout Sessions
If anyone wants me I'll be hiding under a rock somewhere out of earshot of your laughter :) _________________ Lovely girls & great prices always available at CLUB 859, 859 Glenhunly Road, Caulfield, Open 10am till late 7 days. +61-3-9523-8555. Well the main thing is they ditched the folkyness. That was what In Flames was all about. Jesper has said many times that the idea for In Flames was to incorporate folk into metal. Now for some reason he seems to have ditched this goal. Then youve got this horrible electronica stuff scattered about... and Anders trying to sing instead of growl. The pretty folky melodic content is gone. I'm a bit dissapointed in them. Jesper must be listening to his Limp Bizkit CDs too much.
