Am I crazy (all together now: "you're crazy!") or are there a very disproportionate number of Canadians on RPGDX? Or is it just that Canadians tend to fill out the "Location" box more often?

Be nice now and don't turn this into a nationalistic flame-war, anyone, or I'll get you. It's just a curious thing I noticed, and was wondering if anyon else had as well.

P.S. My computer's been down the last little while, that's why I'm so loud today and posting all over the place.

I guess I've noticed that, but I think I attribute any kind of meaningful connection more to lattitude than nationality. Gamers seem to breed better in winter-prone areas. Especially the kind of gamer who likes to settle into a game and spend a good solid week or so playing it (aka an RPG fan). All that darkness, y'know. And the cold, of course. It's very condusive to warm blankets, hot chocolate, and Japanese console RPGs. Ahh, how I love winter.

winter prone? ...I wish.

It's been unbearably hot here the past month almost... and I'm 30 mins. away from the border... yeesh.

*me sings: "Blame Canada! Blame Canada!"

Heh. Sorry. I don't feel any antipathy towards Canadians. Especially Terrance and Philip.

Out of pure curiousity, Jihgfed, how do most Canadians accept "South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut"?

I LOVED South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut!

Although I think I might agree that it's just that Canadians like to fill in the location box more, because us Canadians try as hard as we can to tell the world that we're not Americans :)

heheh... I'm not canadian by birth... but anyway...

I've noticed, unlike most americans (yes, I am generalizing based on my own experiences), canadians don't really suffer from 'flag waving syndrome'... we're comfortable, and secure in our candianism (oooh, new word), so we don't get offended when someone/something makes fun of canada... and when it's done in good spirit, and it's also funny, then we can appreciate that. I think it's a quality many americans lack... they can be so uptight about usa bashing. Yes, I am generalizing again.

*fully expects some american to get offended by this*

Hmm, you're right, ThousandKnives, it probably is a question of geography rather than nationality. I'd also noticed a fair number of northern Europeans around, I just never made the connection. Interesting.

DarkDread, don't you remember me saying

? Now I have to get you... or, well, I would if it weren't such an empty threat.

Regarding South Park, I think it absurd that anyone who normally likes South Park should be offended by the movie: all the complaints were a result of a new audience coming to it, who likely just didn't like it at all and picked out something in particular to criticise. Personally, I thought the movie was rather funny.

What ThousandKnives said about climate is interesting, though... I've heard, of course, of the studies that say people in northern climates tend more towards depression than others (SADS and whatnot). Is this true, does anyone know, or is it just some fun with statistics?

I wonder about such studies. I mean, after all, when you consider the northeast megopolis of the US (DC-Baltimore-Philadelphia-New York City-Boston) is pretty much contained within winter regions (OK maybe not DC and Baltimore), and, when you include Chicago, Detroit and other mid-west metro areas, consists of over half of the US population. And then consider that all of Europe is on a lattitudinal equivalent of Canada or even much further north (though milder due to ocean currents), you're talking about a LOT of people. Probably half a billion people in North America and Western Europe alone who live every year with long dark cold winters. All people have a degree of Seasonal Affective Disorder, but it's hardly puts one in a minority. It's just part of life. Although people WAY up north, like my cousin who works up in Prudhoe Bay above the Arctic Circle, certainly are in a minority, and certainly have a much harsher existence. Although, Anchorage has the best public recreational facilities in all of the US to help make up for it. Most places in the US arent allowed to have nice public places, because in America "public" is interpreted as "I can piss on it and write my name on the walls and steal stuff."

Anyway having been in New Orleans on May 1 and nearly passing out from 90 degree heat and 100% humidity, I would MUCH rather take my chances with winter. You can always put on another coat, but you can only take off so much. You're certainly stuck if you are naked and still too hot, you can't take off your skin after all. Besides, you can't ski when it's 90.

Neil Peart is actually a personal friend of Trey and whats his name. They are considered "honorary canadians" amoung the LA Canadian ex-pats. Anyone who has read "Ghost Rider" knows what I'm talking aboot.

And I love Canada, I just wish Canadians would stop obsessing over how they aren't American. It's almost as bad as flag-waving.

I heard Canada is really big, that Canadians are proud to be Canadian, that Canada sucks, that Canadians say "Forgive us, we're Canadian" and I heard the Canadian crisis song.

Oh yeah, and they have this really cool band, The Arrogant Worms.

Which is why I'm a winter person :) I can cope with cold, heat makes me go crazy.

Yeah, Canadians have been dealing with identity crises for most of their history. I personally think that our national identity is just being ambigious about our national identity.

I have lived in southern California my entire life; I still don't enjoy summers. I prefer colder climes, myself.

From my experiences, it seems that being Canadian is pretty much exactly the same as being American, but fiercely denying it :)

I'm much more productive during the winter -- just remembering all those evening spent wrapped up in a blanket... just me and my sweetie (gcc v2.8.1) basking in the ~40f weather. My wife gives me a funny look when I start opening all the windows when it's already below 50 degrees fahrenheit.

I started (and finished) Frenetic in three weeks, during December. It was fabulous... just me, the compiler, and the cold weather. Makes me all gooey inside just thinking about it ^.^

Unfortunately, in my current locale (just outside Tallahassee) the weather is a bit... how you say? Hot as hell.

Haha, compiler lov'in Sirocco ;).

I remember when I was a kid, I really wanted to get out of canada and work for some game company in the states somewhere, 'cause the money was worth more and stuff. Now that I'm a little more grown up, I'd rather stay here where I don't have to care about wars and healthcare, and instead just take their money (some day). ;).

We may be north, but we still get some nasty summer days around here (95 F + Humidity). Ack.
