I wrote a phonetic name generator about a year ago in C++. It was rather spiffy. I got the idea for it off of an article over at flipcode.com. It could generate a few hundred thousand names based off of a random phonetic marker string in a pretty short amount of time. _________________ "...LeoDraco is a pompus git..." -- Mandrake

You two talk sexy.
(For those who can't decipher I simply meant "I love you two.")

I made this randomizer because I thought it would come in handy for naming the places and people in the world that we're attempting to build.
Right now I'm at BCIT waiting for a lecture to start so I'm gonna go into a little explanation of how my randomizer works:
of course, if it just chose random letters and strung them together you'd get unpronounceable stuff so I made sure that it keeps vowels in the mix. My first idea would be to just keep switching back and forth between consonants and vowels, but every word had the same rhythym and sounded sort of japanese. Nice language, but not what I was going for. So I decided to add some randomness to it. It starts with a random letter, and then for each letter, the next letter is chosen with a weighted randomness according to the one before it. If the last letter is a consonant it's PROBABLY going to be a vowel but maybe not. I also accounted for common letter pairings, so if the letter is an S or a T then there's a greater chance of choosing the letter H for a SH or TH. It's also weighted more toward the most common letters RSTLNE. _________________ Mark Hall

I've heard Oonintad is good this time of year, though the chicks in Erizerka are way hotter. I'd like to be Inwan :)

The article I was referring to. It helps, actually, to find a phonetics book, so that items can be added to the flatfile db. Pretty interesting stuff, actually. _________________ "...LeoDraco is a pompus git..." -- Mandrake

I'd like to take this opportunity (seems as good as any) to officially thank the Dutch for the words "aardvark" and "aardwolf". Where would the animal dictionary (from 'a' for "aardvark" to 'z' for "zebra") be without them?
So, thanks.
"Aard" is a Dutch derivative, right? I'm not making an idiot of myself again? Wouldn't be surprised.

According to the dictionary, you would be correct. _________________ "...LeoDraco is a pompus git..." -- Mandrake
