... you can download an alpha of my next game engine.

http://members.cox.net/music6/TempDemo.zip

Left Alt - 'use'
Left Ctrl - 'cancel'/'menu'
Left Shift - hold down to run

This was tested on a 500 mhz k-6. I've been busy getting ready to move (moving to Silicon Valley area tomorrow) so I didn't have time to clean it up. There's a message box left over from "That 80's Game" and an invisible square to the right of the brown sand. If you hit the usekey on it, it will make the second party member laugh.

To fight, select attack and you'll run up to the enemy. Hold down ALT to start striking him, and move the arrow keys to do different attacks. Some of the menu commands don't work, so... Note, the enemies are too strong to take head on, so you have to cast a spell on them to weaken their defenses.

Let me know if where I'm going with this looks like fun. I'll check the message board again in a few days when I get settled in my new place.

(edit) oh yeah... the game will lock up if you die (infinite loop of enemy trying to select a living player) sorry about that...

I really like the combat system, great combination of turn-based and a realtime fighting game.
And yikes, that guy laughs fast.

Jup, I'd really like to see this game finished.

The battle system's very refreshing, a very nice combination of turn-based and real-time. I didn't understand the differences between the attacks, except that you had to vary them regularly, so more information on that would have been nice.

The running animation is the funniest I've ever seen, with the slow-motion swaying of the arms. Don't change it for the world.

Yes, I'd really like to see how this game turns out. Really.

---- EDIT ----

Incidentally, it ran fine on my 350.

Very nice. I like it.

I am particularly fond of the battle system, if only because I was thinking of making a system very similar in play for RNM. Being that I was trying to come up with something different, I'm rather (pleasantly) surprised something like my idea works so well. Very refreshing, indeed. I'll have to pick your brains on the subject later, if you don't mind.

Other than that, everything seems very nice and fluid.

Yes, I'd also like to see this game finished.

Besides the controls being funky, the whole endowment of Jesus-like water-walking powers, and the inability to actually easily kill anything, the demo has proven to be more enjoyable than some others I have recently perused.

Thanks for the replies, guys, I'm glad you like what I'm going for. Moving into my new place is still taking up a lot of time, so it'll be a while before I put together a real demo.

I've played Fallout before and liked how you could aim for body parts, but I thought it would be nice for it to go faster. There's battle variables that can control which part is weaker than others. Also, the higher the Intelligence stat, the more likely he'll start blocking repeatedly-hit areas.

Well, I never claimed I was an animator :-) This is one of the few games I've done where I'm doing all the graphics.

Very nice! The combat system is a nice break from the traditional ff style; if you could position your characters than it would be perfect. The gfx are awesome especially since they're programmer art. Nice particle effect with the blood spray. Good job, I can't wait to see more progress on this!
