Just a quick check. Who here still has running (in some form or another) either DOS or Win9x?
I pretty much assume if you've gone past that then you're in XP, or non-Windows. _________________ Diver Down

I use Win98 on my webcomp, because the piece of crap can't handle a real OS. _________________ http://www.weeaboo.se

While I cannot believe I am arguing this, you are missing a whole lineage of Win32 environments, both of which differ from Win9x and WinXP. These would be, namely, WinNT and Win2k. By lumping NT/2K into the same catagory as non-Win32 environments, you're mixing apples and oranges.
Regardless of this fallacy on your part, I'm currently running Win2K on my home box. This is temporary, however; as soon as I fork out the cash for a nice 186 Gibi harddrive, I'll be dual-booting, with a Linux distro being my primary OS. (With that silly Windows partition being a gaming platform, should Wine run too slowly.) _________________ "...LeoDraco is a pompus git..." -- Mandrake

heh heh, I knew I'd catch some slack for that. I didn't want to overcomplicate my post unneccesarily, but basically I didn't mention those because I'm not concerned with supporting a game on those platforms. I'm gonna release a DOS/Win9x version, and an XP version. If it works on anything else, great, but I can't test on them. _________________ Diver Down

Understandable. I've been told by a few people that my games don't work on the NT family. But, the NT family was aimed at companies and other large-LAN groups. There are individuals who use them, but they are mostly either random computer geeks or people who didn't understand computers at all and bought NT or 2K on some bizarre reccomendation or something. At any rate, its not a really important market. If you use them, fine, I'm sure they are ok, but you gotta accept the fact that you are a teeny little minority in the *home* (read: entertainment) PC market.

I find it funny that statement is made, considering that 2k is infinitely more stable than the DOS based kernels, and isn't as (graphically) bloated as its XP offspring. Most of the people I know in my area are running 2k; those who aren't do so for foolish reasons. There really isn't anything wrong with 2k and it's support for (current) games. Remember Kiddies: If it cannot run on your box, it probably shouldn't be run at all. _________________ "...LeoDraco is a pompus git..." -- Mandrake

Thanks ThousandKnives, for understanding what I meant. Leo, this isn't a thread to slam or give props to certain OSs. DOS was a huge gaming platform in its time, and the windows game platform of choice now is XP. The NT-based OSs are great but they weren't designed for games. Of course they are more stable than older OSs.
And whether or not anyone agrees, I just wanted to keep this thread on topic. It's not an OS contest. I am going to release an rpg soon and I wanted to know how many people could still run DOS-based games. I need to port what I have to the XP compatible version, but unfortunately the windows version may not run on NT, and I can't support it. _________________ Diver Down

There is a big difference between NT and 2000. Windows NT is old and outdated. Windows 2000 is the immediate predecessor to Windows XP, and should run nearly all native 9x programs, as well as nearly all XP programs. BTW, I also use Windows 2000.

Assuming you are releasing your RPG to the average RPGDX public, here are some statistics of the operating system of RPGDX visitors. These stats are from this months 6088 pageviews*.
Windows XP - 50.1 %
Windows 98 - 23.5 %
Windows 2000 - 14.7 %
Windows Me - 5 %
Linux - 3.3 %
Windows 95 - 0.8 %
Unknown - 0.5 %
Mac OS - 0.5 %
Mac OS X - 0.4 %
Windows NT - 0.4 %
Windows 2003 - 0.1 %
The first list is basically worth caring about. Although I would like you to care about the Linux users as well because I am one of them. :-)
*) That's only www.rpgdx.net, nothing else. I took a quick look at forums.rpgdx.net and it turned out 98 and 2000 are a bit more popular here, with XP still leading with 40%. :-)
