Hehe, good luck! What position will you be occupying? (That is, which area will you cover? Graphics? AI?) _________________ Endless Saga

Game programming? I would have picked you up for art if I were the lead designer.
EDIT: ....Aaaaaaaaand by 'art' I mean 'music'. _________________ We are on the outer reaches of someone else's universe.

I'm not sure exactly what the job will entail, the description was pretty general as "programming". Anyways, they weren't looking for a musician. Or maybe they just haven't thought of that aspect yet, so if I am hired *cross fingers* I could find some way to say "oh yeah, you don't need to go out and look for a musician." and point to myself :) _________________ Mark Hall

As it turns out, my pointer-fu is weak and I got totally slaughtered by skill-testing questions because of it.
They did seem interested in my music though... _________________ Mark Hall

Too bad to hear, would you mind disclosing some information about that test? And although pointers are a nice tool it sounds a bit silly if they would judge you to hard on not mastering them since more highlevel concepts (like iterators) should most of the time be utlized instead. _________________ If there's life after death there is no death, if there's no death we never live. | ENTP

well, it wasn't just pointers that messed me up, it was a bunch of stuff about 3-d rotations and crap that I was just completely clueless about. Even I didn't even think I could program by the end of the interview. _________________ Mark Hall

That's a shame, sorry to hear that man :/
I'm not entirely surprised by the kind of questions they asked. Pointers I can understand: in high-end non-indie game developement where performance is an issue, high-level concepts can often end up using way too much overhead to be acceptable. Pointers are quite possibly the fastest way to work with large amounts of data (don't believe me? Transfer the contents of a large array as a parameter for a function; try with just a pointer to it next.) It's a pretty basic concept too (with somewhat advanced ramifications; a lot of people wouldn't know how to use function pointers despite not having any problems with basic passing-data-by-reference pointers.)
3D, however, is where I'm surprised. What kind of questions were you asked? I would assume they're using one of the mainstream APIs (either Direct3D or OpenGL, or both) to make their games, and these handle most 3D transformations on their own. If they asked about the nitty-gritty math behind 3D transformations, they're dumb. If they asked about the basics of matrix transformations and some common pitfalls (Gimble (sp?) lock comes to mind, as do simple operations every decent 3D programmer should know such as billboarding) then they're just making sure you knew what you were doing.
If you don't get the job because of it (or do you already have your answer? I'm not too clear on that..) then view it as a learning experience and work on developping your knowledge in the areas you bombed. Don't sweat it, can't win 'em all. :)
Good luck for the music thing though. _________________ Endless Saga

I pine for the days when video game music was synthesized, not orchestrated... "Real" music just doesn't fit video games well, in my humble opinion. No offense to "real" musicians, of course. :) I enjoy listening to "real" music, but not while I'm playing a game. _________________ Don't ask no stupid questions and I won't send you away.
