The latest news post from Mandrake is very surprising, I didn't know he was in such financial difficulties. Though I would be able to spare such an amount of money, mainly because I'm still living with my parents, I do not want to.

What I might be able to do is negociate a new host to put the page on. Then somebody else will just need to pay for the domain and not the server anymore. It won't be possible to host sites for members though. Is that an option?

I just offered to provide the money, hopefully this little issue won't disrupt rpgdx and it'll be resolved smoothly.

I have offered to host indie-rpg.net as part of my own web site.

$16 a month sounds expensive. I have a great plan at half that price.

yes, that is a big problem... i provide an answer though... how about this. Mandrake offers a gold member selection. anyone can join, but anyone who wants more options to do on this site can pay a certain amount of money a month in order to get special privileges. Maybe get special games or stuff like that. Or Mandrake could start up a donation box.

About expenses: Actually I think $16/month is fairly reasonable. I've seen (and used) cheaper plans, but they usually have no database server, or very limited disk space/bandwidth.

My current hosting plan (which costs a whopping $75/month) gives me 10 MySQL databases, 30 GB/month bandwidth, and 1 GB disk space. I assume this is enough to swallow indie-rpg.net whole without even noticing, which is why I offered to host it. The only real expense would be the domain name: $15 setup and $1/month for hosting, $10/year for registration.

My thought on the special games..... no. Because that's judging the submitters' games, isn't it? "Oh ya, this game is better so you have to pay for it" and what about the people that made it? Do they get any money? And what if they want it to be free? Or for everyone to be able to download it without membership?

Not to be a jerk or anything, those questions just popped right in the second you said special games, Barok.

It warms the cockles of my heart to see a community take the initiative to aid a beloved nexus like this one.

I'm against giving some persons more rights than others. A friend of mine has a pretty fast server who'll give you hundreds megabytes of webspace for a few dollars a month. Anyone interested? Personally I don't care about the URL of the site. I like indie-rpg.net as well as indie-rpg.cjb.net or something like that, which is free.

bjorn- i was going to email you about this eventually, but i thought i had more time for the site to be up. when I found out I had 15 days left before it expired...well that sucked.

actually for the things rpgdx requires (pgp+a mysql database and an insane amount of bandwidth) the price of the site is fairly cheap.

anywya- no pay for memebership options....i think that would be too risky. What if not enough people join? etc, etc.

I'm currently reveiwing the diffrent offers, adn will email each person that is trying to help to give you all my decision on the fate to indie-rpg.net.

adam's right, Ninkazu. like maybe limited edition games that have been made by mandrake and co., or maybe old games made by mandrake that have special features. that's what i meant, Ninkazu. but, when i think about it, it seems kinda idiotic to change games around just to give to people who pay.

and by the way Georg, read what i said thoroughly. here's a step by step of what i suggested.

1. people sign up for gold members. (no, not austin powers movie...)

2. Every month, they pay a small fee.

3. In return, they have special features that you couldn't get if you don't become a special member, like special boards, special pages of the site, more authority than the average joe... (the joe i know isn't average. For my age, he's got one of the hardest hockey shots i know! about 60-70 kph!)

There is also another option, but it's not the best one. Ask companys if they would like to put an advertisement banner on rpgdx in return for a large fees... this is the most common option, but it's not the best liked. The one thing i don't want to see on rpgdx is dozens of popups...

AND...
i don't know if Hundreds of Megabytes would be enough. because some games have to be uploaded to the server rpgdx is on. and i think there's quite a few of them!! i may be wrong though... hundreds may be enough...

nope, no games on RPGDX are uploaded onto the server itself. The only sites on indie-rpg.net that actually host games are those by the people who are hosted by indie-rpg.net. All games you download from rpgdx are remotely-linked.

Either option (people pay or pop-ups) are unreliable. There is not a certainty that i will receive x amount of money permonth to cover the costs. And if one month i don't receive x-amount, then we'd be right back to this post.

Well, it doesn't seem to me that it would be THAT bad to host indie-rpg (indie-rpg.grenideer.com) but I really don't know the bandwidth it takes. If no games are hosted on it I don't see bandwidth being a problem, but then again I've never hosted sites with high user volume before.
