Hey guys, after a few months of redesigning my CoRE game engine, I have enough put together for a tech demo. I'm releasing this demo to get testing feedback results on a variety of systems, so the more people here who can help out the better :)
Disclaimers apply, it is only a partial game engine no battles or puzzles or treasures yet, only movement and switching between town and world map. Also the graphic tiles are obviously placeholder and taken from DW remix.
All the information can be found here:

Thanks everyone for your help!!!

Yep, i'd never play a game that made me install something else first. This is why I don't play flash games or anything requiring that visual basic dll or whatever. I do support java however because it is a very effective scripting language for the winapi.

Well I can take programs needing the vbruntime and some minor stuff but QUICKTIME!!!! it's not only hellspawn its also an abonimation and should never have been brought into existence and even less should it plague any plattform besides that fruitcake computer who gave birth to it. _________________ If there's life after death there is no death, if there's no death we never live. | ENTP

uhh... why is everyone so vehemently opposed to Quicktime? I don't understand where this negative energy comes from... but anyway I'm looking into ways to forgo the quicktime requirement, it just hasn't been a priority for me yet. I'm only posting it in the state it's in now so I can make it better... and I need user input to do that.
Anyone else who isn't allergic to Quicktime care to give it a go? :)

I honestly can't understand why your scrolling is so obscenely slow. I hope you're going to fix that.
And why do I need quicktime? It doesn't even have any video in it, just images and a couple MIDI files.
Edit: EWWW You're using QuickTime to load your images? And PICT files, no less! Eww, use PNG.

Die QuickTime, die! Having your engine require QuickTime gives a really bad impression. _________________ http://www.weeaboo.se

Runs fine, but the scrolling is absurdly slow. Dump Quicktime (installing third party apps is something to be avoided) and go with either PNG or PCX images, both of which have extensive lib support.

OK, a little update on the demo. I've changed all files to PNG and took away Quicktime checking. Hopefully the engine will run without it now... I also switched the game size lower to 640x480 and changed the bit depth to 16, which gives a bit of a speed boost in the scrolling. Anyone care to test? A new download is ready at:

Still kind of slow. But scroll speed shouldn't depend on a computer's speed, should it? If playing on a low-end machine like mine, I'd expect the engine to compensate by allowing graphics chop than slow movement.

Any chance you'd release the source so that enlightent Linux users can take a look at it? Or are you using any Windows-only libraries?
