Hell yeah! With my latest paycheck I've finally been able to comfortably afford a new computer!

AMD 2300+
512 MB DDR RAM
40 GB Hard Drive 7200 RPM
Shared video card (blah, I know, but I'll upgrade it later when I got money again)
52x CD-ROM (I'll get a combo DVD/CD-RW later also)
Soundblaster AUDIGY 2, baby, yeah!

The main thing I was looking for was the Audigy 2 though, 'cause I just need a high-quality audio processing machine.

Whole package was $821 (canadian) after taxes and everything. Pretty good deal IMHO.

But I'm going to need at least enough food to make it until Tuesday when I can pick the computer up from the store :)

You shouldn't have skimped on the CPU IMO.

Well, it's a big improvement over your previous machine, so I'm sure you'll enjoy it. In the future (if you haven't already), make sure you pick a hard drive with both high RPM and low access speed. Having a slow hard drive can seriously cripple an otherwise fast machine :( 7200rpm is the lowest I'd recommend, and I see you've got that already, which is good.

My XP2800+ should be arriving Tuesday :) Looks like we'll both be enjoying our presents... heh.

Well this is good news...
Haha, okay, fine. I'll stop.
But damn, you got that for under 1000 canadian?
That's a DAMN good deal.
I'm still stuck with this 1.7 ghz machine, 256 ram, (not all too bad until you hear how miniscule the HD is) 16 gig HD.
Arg.
I have about 1 gig free at the moment...

16 gig is all right, though you always have to be conscious of what you're installing and how much free space you have.

With my old computer's 20 gig hard drive I got into the habit of having one "big game" on the hard drive at a time. So I'll play Neverwinter Nights for a couple of weeks, then uninstall it and install Soldier of Fortune II for the next little while et cetera. I called it the "Hard Drive Shuffle".

I was gonna get a 60 or 80 gig hard drive, but I'm still on a pretty tight budget, this being my first time out on my own.

I dunno, maybe. I know that an AMD Duron is better than a Celeron at least, but from my experience with newer games the main deciding factors for performance seem to be the RAM and the Video Card. But I wasn't going for a gaming system, just something I could easily compose/record high-quality music with, so the only things I didn't skimp on were the sound card and the RAM.

Hmm, I don't know much about recording/processing/editing music, but the CPU is at least extremely important for encoding, though to modern CPUs, audio encoding isn't that much of a hardship.

Woah, that's some expensive stuff... Why'd you go for a 3400+ instead of the 3200+? Major price difference, minor performance difference.

Avoid the Duron and Celeron completely, if you can!

According to both Anandtech and Sharkey Extreme, AMD CPUs (Duron,Athlon,XP) totally own comparable Intel CPUs from 2.5hgz down. We're talking anywhere from 25-40% difference in speed across the board -- very substantial considering the AMDs in that performance range are also much cheaper than their Intel counterparts :)

Now, the tables turn at 2.5ghz and above, with Intel taking the lead, but once again you'll be paying for the Intel stamp on your CPU :(

I may not even go with the 3400+... I'm still thinking about going with the 3000+ and just OC'ing up to 3400+ levels... but past that everything else is pretty firm. Just waiting on my federal tax return to order everything.

Keep in mind that the 3200+ and up has 1MB L2 cache, while the 3000+ only has 512KB. And if you're going to OC, don't buy cheap memory like I did - I can't even get it to run stable at 207MHz FSB.
