- I fade in and out. :) A lot of the coding I've been doing is grind work to catch my sites (and sites I host for some institutions) up on technology... the latest being converting everything over to XHTML 1.0 Transitional. But in the past few days I've had a strengthened interest in getting my map editor done so I can move on... so I've been working on trying to find the Java classes most prudent to developing the editor.

- So yeah... I guess, what with it being a game dev forum and all, talking about XHTML and stuff isn't really something prudent here.

- That said, if someone is really good with Java and wants to point me in the direction of the best Java classes for images, that'd be useful.

( I plan to use a JTable full of panels of something that can display at least 2 images one atop the other )

Why not just use Tiled? (Also, a panel full of other controls is a TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE way to build a map editor, especially in a system where controls are heavyweight like in Java. You'll probably have to custom-draw a single panel as your viewport.)

Uh, why are you using a JTable? You should set up your own JPanel and watch for mouse clicks to place the tiles. The data can be stored as a 2-dimensional array for each layer of the map.

I assume that you're saying that each entry in the JTable will contain a panel where you can select each thing that's in that tile.

I wrote a map editor in Java and did essentially what I said. There weren't many different kinds of objects in the game, so I just selected them from menus at the top of the screen. Left clicking placed the objects in the map, and right clicking opened up a screen that allows you to modify their scripts.

By the way, Janus, the controls in Java are only heavyweight if you use AWT. If you use Swing, they're lightweight. SWT (an alternative to Swing that can be downloaded seperately) is also lightweight.

- Yeah, what I've basically got going is a JTable that doesn't act anything like a JTable. I've had thoughts of replacing it with another graphical component like JCanvas or something, but I've been adding other things to the editor at the moment.

- BUt yeah, what I ended up doing is having to override the paint method... and since I don't use any "data" in the table (it's stored in another object which encapsulates the map data in a simple format), it might as well not be a table at all.

- I decided to use my own editor, because either way I was going to have to end up making modifications. My editor's just missing a couple of dialog boxes now, though. :)

Heh......man, ifI had TIME to lead a group effort, I'd be jumping for the opportunity. However, I have less than 2 hours a day to myself, the rest of the time is spent working at either CompUSA or on a client's project(s).

I'm trying to get $22,000 +/- $1000 for a scion tc. before December.
I've got $2300 so far. :p
Once I get my car though, I'll move to TX and live with my sister for a bit while I build a client-base in TX, so then I'll have about 4-6 hours a day that I could do whatever I wanted (duh! game dev!!!!) ...so maybe then I'd be able to lead a project, but now isn't the time.

damn its late......4am.......gotta sleep now. goodnight.
miss all you guys, miss the fun times we all had...I miss my childhood. ...rambling......goodnight.,

I feel for you dude. My situation is similar in a way... 'tis the path we have chosen, to walk independently, and attain fulfillment in it. Perhaps for a margin of time happiness must fall by the wayside in favor of fulfillment.

This'll all end sometime. Things'll get better.

Katy for awhile, then Austin is where I'm moving "permanently" when my girl gets out of college (4 years from now).

It sounds to me like DevX is sacrificing his free time to work towards his own goals. I don't feel sorry for you, i'm happy for you.

Ewww, sorry to hear that. Katy is a rough place, man. It's near my parent's house (in The Woodlands).

Part of the problem is the revival of the GDR. Now many of the interesting topics that would have been brought up here are instead discussed at the GDR. This seems a shame, because the GDR does seem to place a premium on what I see as mostly superfluous discussion that never gets down to the real problems facing indie rpgs today.

I'd hate to think that the GDR is causing problems for other boards :-)

If you feel that this kind of topics you want to discuss aren't getting enough attention here, please do come over and register an account at the GDR; we are always looking for more contributors, and we've got a couple of fun contests in the pipeline.
