Hrm...the graphics are a little static, that's the only real problem I see...the screenshots seem to lack "life". I wasn't aware this was a commercial attempt though. If this game is to be a modern game with commercial aspiration then it definately needs more work in the graphics department, to be sure...only the rare few can get away with lesser graphics (RuneScape anyone?). _________________ If you play a Microsoft CD backwards you can hear demonic voices. I couldn't get into Avernum. Which is sorta weird, since I'm a huge fan of both Exile and Baldur's Gate. I don't know what it is. _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

The game has good graphics, the problem why ppl think its boring maybe because he made the mistake of putting screenshots with the game status and too many of them show the same colors..maybe if he replaces those with some landscape, or shows some green or blue...ppl will find it more attractive.
brown alone is known as a boring color..

All this talk about 3D RPGs almost makes me want to start one up.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I read all the art bashing earlier on in this thread. For fuck's sake, the graphics are good! They may not be unique, or have an overt sense of style, but they do the job and there's nothing blatantly 'wrong' with them. Better graphics on the nes? 'Glowing pink mutants?' What kind of expectations do people have here, completely aside from those statements just being plain wrong? I was honestly wondering what game RD was really looking at...
VDweller, your game looks quite promising. The graphics are fine and suited to the task-- and for the record, none of the screenshots hurt my eyes or made me strain to see what was going on.

If you're implying that Castlevania 2 looks worse than that, then you're the one doing unreasonable art bashing.

It's very very easy to pick out specific references to make a generalized comparison. I can easily find a great-looking Vectrex game and compare it to the worst graphical nightmare on the Playstation and it'd be hard for people to agree that the Playstation game looks better...and then using that as a base, I can state that the Vectrex, in general, has better graphics than the Playstation. It'd be complete bullshit but hey, why not? This seems to be your strategy here, RD...picking out a specific NES game (for its time, those were amazing graphics) and comparing it to a single screenshot of this guy's game (which is a pretty bland screenshot, there are better ones). That's pretty low. Furthermore, Josiah wasn't art-bashing, just being realistic. While I do agree that the graphics need some work and some *life*, they do the job well enough. I'm wondering what your prejudice is here... _________________ If you play a Microsoft CD backwards you can hear demonic voices. If you look at my original statement...
Rainer Deyke wrote: | I've seen better-looking graphics on the NES. |
...I never said that Age of Decadence looks worse than all, or most, or even a significant minority of NES games. I only need one example to prove my point. And my point wasn't that Age of Decadence looks like pure unadultered crap (which it doesn't), but that you don't need fancy technology to create a good-looking game so long as you have good artists and good art direction.

I think the confusion comes from us interchangingly using "graphics" and "artwork" as being the same meaning. In terms of "graphics" (visual representation), if we're comparing against the NES, then for sure the 24-Bit 3D visuals are better. Clearly, this is because NES is limited to 48-colors/256x224res at a time vs the 16 million colors/1280x1024res on a PC. The maker of the game used 3D graphics and therefore, by default, the visuals are definately better than any NES game. In fact, the game's graphics are actually not bad for an independant game.
I think most of the discussion was actually about the artwork. When I talk about art, I talk about the style, originality and creativity of the work. I think this is what RD was mostly pointing out.

Okay, I see the relevance now. In terms of artistic style, you're certainly correct...CV2 definately looks better from an artistic point of view. Just keep in mind that CV2 was finished long ago and this project here is apparently a long way from being finished...maybe they'll take it up a notch or twenty before calling it "complete". _________________ If you play a Microsoft CD backwards you can hear demonic voices.
