Well first, I made the version 6.5 with walking and mouse merged together as you wanted... Some other tester said that the interface was horrible and did not want to go any further and it seems that my demo doesn't work on windows 7...

Now, I'm wondering how the interface should be but I don't seem to be good at it... I'm also thinking of removing the mouse completely...

And this is what is new at the moment...

Thank you for asking...

Making a mouse-driven walkabout interface should be simple.

  • Get the player sprite's box coords.
  • If the mouse is horizontal to the box (that is, within the upper and lower Y coordinates of the box) then check for whether the mouse is right or left of it. If right, move the sprite right. If left, move the sprite left.
  • If the mouse isn't horizontal, check whether it is above or below the sprite, and send a "move up" or "move down" call accordingly.

And if someone believes that's horrible, then they probably believed Diablo's interface was "horrible" also.

This is worth a try...

I'll work on it this weekend! :)

Also, I think Diablo use the mouse only if I recall correctly... or maybe it also allows the player to use shortkeys like Warcraft or Starcraft... Anyway, thank you for your reply!

Regards,

Bernard

New version 6.6 (Mouse mode only) as requested...

Sorry for the delay, I got some problems to sort out in my life but the demo is now available for download in the first post!

Thanks!

Diablo II used the F-keys to qickly select skills, 1-4 to access items in the belt, and a number of keys to control other stuff liek running vs. walking.

For all of these there exist mouse controls, too, but the keyboard is more handy, since you need the mouse for maneuvering and aiming, and have no time to click all the other things, too.

I use to end up with much confusion about keyboard and mouse interfaces in my games ... often I start with keyboard only, and add mouse later, and usually there are more than enough inconsistencies in the end :/

I agree with you, I still don't know what's best, keyboard only or mouse only since both of them doesn't seems to mix very well on the mind of many people... Oh well... My new version 6.7 is mouse driven with hotkey keyboard shortcuts as suggested...

As always, you can find the download links in my first post.

The main problem with my mouse driven demos versions 6.6 and 6.7, is either my computer that might be too old or my mouse coding that might have a flaw because moving the main character around is slow and sluggerish with the mouse! Yes, I used a half second delay with each move of that character because without it of with a smaller delay the character moves way too fast and out of control! I don't know what to do about it...

Some advice would be appreciated...

Thanks!
