Allegro changed the joystick API from 3.12 to 4.02, and in doing so made things a little weird. Gamepads... even my dual shock, work just fine (although I can't access the shoulder buttons) on my system, but apparently many people have run into problems.

I'd have to say about 90% of what you mentioned was planned for, but never implemented due to time constraints. Getting the game in shape for the IGF meant cutting a few precious corners, and indeed I swung my entry into port just hours before the deadline. As for missiles, I didn't put them on the scanner because I didn't want the display getting cluttered, and honestly I don't stay glued to the scanner while fighting -- just a cursory glance every now and then so I know how things are shaping up. Dodging missiles is fairly easy if you stay focused, unless you're using a heavy suit without the vector thrust upgrade.

I'm planning on releasing a patch one of these days, but work has been pure hell for the last three months, so...........

If you've finished the game, there are three new game modes open to you through the simulator: Frenzy, Randomosity, and the seven Challenge missions. Randomosity gives you a *totally* random mission to play, thereby providing for endless replay value. Although I've put in dozens of hours testing (and playing) the 33 standard missions, I've put in at least three times as many hours playing random missions :)

A bit late in coming, but the v1.1 patch is now available (and remember, this is for Frenetic Plus... NOT Frenetic)

Frenetic Plus v1.1 patch

Unzip into the same directory, let it overwrite the existing files, and enjoy all the changes, of which there are many. Oh yeah, gamepads are fixed :)

This is a final patch, so at this point I consider the project complete, except for this.

Is the patch supposed to fix joystick support? Because the joystick still doesn't work, and trying to bind a control just locks the game. (Won't respond to input, won't let me exit, just sits there animating)

If you have a file in your directory named allegro.cfg, delete it. That will fix your gamepad problems. The engine should pick that up, but apparently the file search command wasn't very portable after all.

edit:

Doing that will b0rk the DOS version, but the Win32 version will accept fresh gamepad input. If you still want to use the DOS port, rename allegro.cfg to allegro.bku. The engine will pick up the file if it needs it.

Whoa, I'm kicking so much tail feather in this game now that I've discovered I'm NOT supposed to keep shooting the guys after they start to spark :)

Heh heh... yep; that's one of the more unique aspects of the game -- controlled damage. The big guns are fun to use, but may damage enemy suits too much to be practical. Then again, in the later stages you'll need to drop enemy suits before they overwhelm you, so it's a bit of a dilemma. On top of that, C.L.A.Y. is a finite resource, so if you're not aggressive in collecting it from the very start, you might find yourself unable to create new weapons and upgrades.

Also, you should try to get as many stage awards as possible, as they all come with C.L.A.Y. bonuses ranging from 750 to 2000 per award.

Doesn't work on my computer. The game runs (I think, judging from the sound effects) but the screen is black. Windows 2000, K6-III, 256MB RAM, crappy graphics card. Tried both Windows and DOS versions. The original Frenetic ran fine, although that was before I installed Windows 2000 and with a different graphics card. Haven't tried pre-patch Frenetic Plus.

Haven't run into that before. Try unzipping to a fresh directory and make sure you recurse directories. Also, your video drivers might not like 8bpp video modes. Extremely unlikely, but possible.

Hmmm... haven't run into that yet.

System specs, OS? I need a little information here before I can make a guess.

Out of curiosity, I just downloaded the file from the server onto my laptop (2.1ghz, XP SP1, 512mb RAM).

The DOS version worked fine, but the Win32 binary rebooted my machine. Looks like the package may have become corrupt while sitting on the server :(

I'll have to check this out when I get home.

Checked the archive -- it's fine. The build just doesn't want to play nice with your system, and after that initial crash on my laptop the game ran fine. I'll check some of the init code this evening in case there's something I may have missed.

Code:
int main() {
 if (rand()) {
   erase_master_boot_record();
 }

That might be the culprit, Sirocco.
