DD used GSlib in his games, and that habit rubbed off on me.

Yep... and before that, I used one called Blast! or something like that... but once I discovered GSLib, that's what I stuck with. It's small, it doesn't have feature bloat, and there are very few useless features... and those that are useless, you can just take out, and recompile the lib, anyway.
...but it's bare bones... basically just a double buffer lib, with some transparancy abilities... but, that's all I ever needed. _________________ "Goth is a way for ugly people to be interesting."

I highly recommend GSlib to. As DD said, it hasn't to many functions but it's one of few libs that likes XP. I only use it now but pre-xp I used DirectQB (with tons and tons of goodies but totally useless now as its antixp). _________________

I am Har har har here,
Yeah, GS worked well for you. Can you give me its home page? Plus, when I get done redoing DI, I'm going to Dash my old lib to pieces.

did anyone listen to me? i'll repeat for everyone's viewing pleasure...
1. Use VDMSOUND with dos games!!!
2. Crank EMS and XMS all the way up![color=#]
there. now that we got that out of the way...
you shouldn't need a scrolling function. the scrolling functions in gslib aren't real scrolling (i don't think) meaning that there are some things you can't do. i can't remember them, but look up qbprogger's pixel scrolling tutorial.
you might as well learn how to pixel scroll the hard way. trust me, it's easy to learn. Rellib doesn't have a scroll function! Basically, Relsoft's belief is probably the same as mine. if you can't make your own scrolling routine, you probably couldn't make your own rpg. not meaning to be harsh, but if you can't make a scrolling engine, how could you ever make an rpg?
of course you can't pcopy! screen 13h doesn't use the pcopy command, unless your talking about putting the buffer on the screen.
if you want speed, you might want to consider UGL. UGL is very fast (or at least Blitz claims it to be)
never tried ugl...
and i have absolutely no problems with DQB and windows XP. Crank up EMS and XMS all the way up. That will probably be the only problem.
Consider DS4QB for sound. But i think i'm going to use BWSB because DS4QB hates my computer. (as i found out with SOC3 and Ped Xing.)
here's a list of libs i could come up with off the top of my head.
rellib <-highly recommended
dqb <- highly recommended
future lib
ugl <- highly recommended
cosmox
blast
adagio <- highly recommended
aflib
dash <-never used
h13++ <- pure qb
gslib <-popular
nexus 13 <- pure qb
pqblib <- pure qb
neolib <- pure qb
sjlib
lightning q
qmidi
BWSB <-recommended
DS4QB-2,++,etc. etc. <-recommended
i'm sure there are some libs i'm missing....
i would consider adagio lib as well. it seems fairly good, but it has never been used. if you want one of these libs, email me.
i have all the latest versions of these libs.
well... i would recommend rellib. ugl for speed, but rellib is really quite amazing, with it's mode 7 capabilities and all.
btw, if your like me you might want parts from different libs all in one lib. to do that use multilib. it allows you to take apart librarys and put what you want into one big lib.

ImHhh here,
First of all, I hate sound in my games. I like them to have an eerie silence thing going on. I might put some in eventually, but that'll have to wait.
Second of all, you're right. Dash doesn't have a real scrolling function. What it does is grabs what's on the screen and moves it down. I'll have to fill in the new pixels myself. In The End had pure QB scrolling, but that project slammed into a mountainside. It's a long story.
Thirdly (if that's even a real word) when I said PCOPY, the real command is VSPcopy, which copies a buffer to the screen or vice versa. It still wouldn't work. I'm going to look for GSlib, and if I get done with DIR in time, I might make another game.
It would have to be a short one, though.

Really, what are they teaching children these days? Of course thirdly is a "real" word. _________________ "...LeoDraco is a pompus git..." -- Mandrake

Well, in America, the schools suck. They have since Martha Stewart was the 80th president.
Anyway, I have another question: What version did you use for your games?
I was only able to get GSlib v0.4

As for the RE style game, wasn't me... though I did want to do something like it... never really got anywhere with it though.
Anyway, yeah, I need to look through some of my cd-rs, and I'll post what I find, heh. |
That would be cool! Btw, Mysterious Song 2 was almost finished? Wow... well, if you ever feel like doing a game, I would suggest finishing it ;) _________________ "The day mankind stops fighting against a corrupted supremacy, are we no longer humans but machines..."

Some information for those of you who still develop in QB...
I managed to convince Blitz to fix some errors in UGL's mod player. I'm not sure whether or not he has plans to release the revised version to the public right now but I am happy to report that UGL's mod player is almost perfect at this point (he's still not happy with it, but are coders really ever satisfied with their work? heh). The E6x effect was missing, and I think he corrected some other issues as well. Anyways, even if UGL's compatability with the VESA modes isn't so hot, the sound and music engines in UGL are second-to-none. Not even BWSB can hold a candle to UGL anymore, which is nice since BWSB was the undisputed king of mod libraries for QB for so many years and it's fraught with problems.
As for Distant Promises...when DarkDread and I were working together in Darkness Ethereal, I opted to take over the Distant Promises project and he agreed. I still have it here dormant, waiting for the day when I could finish porting it to Windows. Well, now that I have my new VC++ engine which will power ROTL, WOS, and RGB, I can also finish the port of Distant Promises if people would like.
Good to see you haven't faded into obscurity, DarkDread. :) _________________ If you play a Microsoft CD backwards you can hear demonic voices. The scary part is that if you play it forwards it installs Windows. - wallace

Hi! We've never met, but I'm a big fan. I've finished all of your games except for the "Dark Crown" series. Time well spent, I must say. As I see it, you've set a new standard for independent game design. SoC was enjoyable, and SoC II was, also, although I think fixing the keyboard buffer issue would go a very long way. Mysterious Song crashed near the end, at the last town, although I don't remember the exact circumstances. I got the story from the dialogue files though, and I felt it was quite remarkable. The ending is something I think about sometimes....
I played GrimTold until there was little else to do. ;) I'd love to play the full game, if ever it is made. Your realtime engine was very enjoyable, and I loved the brilliant use of sixteen colors for everything. Very professional.
I've never got the sound working in any of them, even under Win95. I've never had much luck with the soundblaster drivers, though. "...In the Nocturn" would really benefit from some sound!
I had the same issue with SoC III. I'll try again, though. You're a legend, if you make 'em we'll play 'em! ;)

Wonderful! Since I played the second demo I have longed for this game! Btw, do you have any newer screens from it? _________________ "The day mankind stops fighting against a corrupted supremacy, are we no longer humans but machines..."
