@Nephilim

I guess, I play different RPGs. I never played one of the console style RPGs. I assume I play those that are on the borderline of what's usually meant to be a RPG.

Among my history: Bards Tale 3, Dungeon Master, Chaos Strikes Back, Moria, Angband, Diablo, Diablo II, Arkanum - I guess that's not the classic RPG career.

I've peeked into a few others, but those are that stayed in my memories as good or at least ok games.

I didn't play pen&paper RPGS since more than 12 years. I think I just did what you say and looked for another hobby. (I'd like to point out that there have been different reasons, that I don't want to publish here, which finally broke the friendship. I guess we could have coped with the in-game dissensions.) I like gardening, which is a very nice contrast to computer work. I also like painting, but lately this much merged into game development, OTOH this isn't really the creative way of painting.

Why am I making games? This is actually a good question, I never asked myself so far. I think it boils down to one point:

Some games that I've played really impressed me. Some I consider masterpieces, great achievements. Most notably "Homeworld", that one made me lough and cry, still let me feel like a hero fighting a way to the lost home world.

-> I guess I'm just a "I want to do that too" person

Well, I haven't played all of those, but yes, those don't appear to be the more plot-driven RPG's (although there are some pretty gruesome things happening in the Diablo games). The central motivation in those games isn't to advance story, but to explore the environments. The plot is little more than a frame story, but really, the point is the exploration, so maybe you *are* safe from those sorts of experiences.

That's good, I guess. I've seen game-level things split people apart before, and it's such a waste. If there are real reasons for ending a friendship, that's sad, but when it's a dispute over a game, it's just senseless.

That's as good a reason as I can think of. Game development is a highly dynamic and communicative art, and wanting to engage in such an expressive media makes perfect sense to me.
