Okay, I think we're running out of time. I wouldn't call it a mystery host because I and Bjorn know the guy and are actually able to visit him (and I sometimes do). The sum of the downtime of the last couple of years is less than 24 hours, so it's pretty reliable. Anyway, I'll be the personal guarantee that it workes out, and if for some reason it doesn't, we can always switch to another server. We have less than a week left so we have to make a decision.
This is my option, which I think to be pretty good. Please put down the alternatives and we can vote about it or let Mandrake decide. I would also like to hear who of you is willing to pay the small amount of money.

just for reference, if anyone wants to contact me sometime in the future, then just e-mail me. Please put it in your e-mail address books, or even on a piece of paper and store it away for twenty year. i'd enjoy it if anyone put their address on here as well.

Rainer Deyke, indeed your offer sounds very good, but would it allow for the people hosted on IndieRPG to have their own accounts? And, I would like to have full control of IndieRPG while you would be hosting it. If this is ok then maybe putting IndieRPG on your host is a better plan.
I'd like to keep both options open, I've just emailed Derek (the woodenshoe guy) to ask about the details of his services.

I just checked with my host, and it seems I'm fairly limited in what I can do. I can set up an additional ftp account for indie-rpg (with full read/write permission to the directory from which indie-rpg.net would be hosted), but don't have enough additional ftp accounts available to give one away for every site that is hosted by indie-rpg.net. A custom web-based upload interface would probably work. There are also many administrative functions which I can't give away without giving away the main password of the account. I can set up a MySQL database, but I can't let you set up your own. I can give away almost 200 email addresses, but I have to be the one to set them up. I can't even let you change the password to those email addresses or to the ftp account without going through me. Finally, only I can add new domain names to the account.
There is also the issue of disk space and bandwidth. Disk space is not much of an issue - I have 1 GB and only use a fraction of that - but bandwidth could be. I absolutely can't afford to give away more than 1 GB/month. I'm certain that RPGDX itself doesn't use anywhere close to that amount of bandwidth, but the hosted sites might, if they host games that are listed on major download sites.

Guys and gals, I can't write too much right now since I'm on a deadline but I just stumbled on the site and saw Mandrake's message. I just sent him an email and if all goes well, I'll be happy to host RPGDX on our wonderful new servers at the NAC datacenter.
I'm all for community and you seem to have a wonderful little one over here. It would be a shame to see it shut down or changed.
In any case, I must dash!

Please, Aral, can you post the details of your server here and also answer the questions I asked Rainer Deyke?
As things are now, I am taking over IndieRPG and the plan was to have Derek host it. But I'll have to pay Derek for this service, and will be asking for community funding. I was thinking about asking 5$ a year to be hosted on IndieRPG. But if a free alternative exists that still offers what we need, then that is of course preferable.
But we need to get moving IndieRPG this weekend because shortly after, this server cannot be relied on anymore.

Bjorn's taking over rpgdx? NOOOO!!! It'll be chaos! chaos i tell you! it'll be the renesaunce (i didn't spell that right. it's actually a reference to the dark ages) all over again! Bjorn will whip up taxes! if we don't pay, he'll force us to work on a big game that nobody likes in order for us to keep on coming here! Having that much power as Bjorn has now will corrupt anybody too! Soon he'll do pretty much anything, like put on... pop...ups... or ...banner...ads... and that's not all! using his evil intellect, he'll find a way, so that when someone enters rpgdx, they can't ever get out! Then Bjorn'll start doing things, like stepping on toes, putting baseball bats to people's heads, etc. etc. AAAHHHHHHHH!!! BIG SHOCK!!!! FAINT!!!!!!
heh heh... just kidding. i kinda saw that you'd take over rpgdx (for now) in the topic rpgdx due to die in 15 days? i think it's great that rpgdx will live to see another day. and i'm sure you'd do a fine job, Bjorn. _________________ Adosorken: I always liked slutty 10th graders...

if you mean reniassance....that wasn't teh dark ages. In fact, the reniassence(sp?) period was a rebirth of intellectual society. A renessiance is just what bjorn will give us, I think, and that is a good thing.

Maybe RPGDX will live to DIE another day, you'll never know.
But that won't be because of my bro. ;) Or maybe it will, another thing we don't know until we've seen.
Funny thing I noticed: In this thread only Dutch people are stupid enough to show their faces. :)

Thanks for the supports guys, I'll need it with the likes of Barok. ;-)
As it looks now, I can say there probably won't be the need for any banners (which I am against anyway) or any other form of funding. Aral's server seems like a very good choice, meeting our current demands. People currently hosted on IndieRPG should be able to move along with the rest. We'll all be hugging him when the move is over. :-)
Sad news is he cannot host Pixel-Zone as Zoggles indicated that it takes 20-25 GB of bandwidth a month. I hope the bandwidth-sucking part can be left out for now, because the site has a lot of other usefull stuff.

I guess only Dutch people are stupid enough to show their face in general. But who says this weird picture of mine is really me? And who says I am really called "Bjørn"? I do. :-)

Ha! I'm the anti-Bjorn man! I'll be like, the terrorist, who does stuff like post stuff against Bjorn and all that stuff! I'll do stuff like input virus's into the site, until Bjorn gives up control! then, with rpgdx as my springboard, i'll take over other sites until i, Barok, rule the web!!
now the evil laughter.
MWA HA HA HA HA HA HA HACK HACK HACK COUGH COUGH...ahem.
of course, the real horror will come when i recieve all the bills for keeping the sites on the web...
hey, i never said i'd take over the servers!
