I won't be participating because I've just realized that I completely suck on every aspect of RPGs besides playing them =)
will be intresting to see what you guys churn out tho, the last compos really did have some impressive stuff for their timeframes.

When you say we shouldn't do any work on the plot, etc., do you mean we shouldn't even think about it? Because that'll be hard, as I've already got ideas racing in every sort of direction. Or are we just not allowed to commit anything to paper (or hard-disk, or whatever)?
I don't mean to be officious; it's just that I want to follow the rules as closely as possible, if I'm going to participate.

It seems to me that you should at least be able to come up with a design document before the compo. I mean, otherwise, how could you form teams? All members of a team would have to:

    (a) agree on what they all want to build ("Oh, you mean we're making a 3D RTS?"),

    (b) know what role each person is going to play ("Bob, you build the spell system. Frank, you're responsible for the combat sprites."), and

    (c) have access to reference documents so that what each person creates is going to be compatible with the engine/storyline/etc ("No, the tiles are supposed to be 32x32, not 256x256! And this is supposed to be a dark story about goth vampires - why do all the trees have smiley faces on them?").

...or is that supposed to be part of the challenge - getting the team to agree on what to build within the first couple of hours?

we are talking about small teams, no more than one or two people. And since we are talking small games (ie: one that can be created in 48 hours), I think a design doc would be a bit of an overkill.

So can someone sum up the info on this thing? Sorry, this thread is kinda schizoid. Date, time, ripped gfx/music or not? Are previous code/engines ok or not?Personally, not allowing ripped gfx will mean I most likely WON'T participate... although allowing them won't mean I will....

Just pinging this issue. Have the date and rules been set yet? If I'm going to be able to participate, it would be good to know sooner rather than later when it's going to happen.

I'm assuming we're talking sometime in mid-April?

April 18th will be good for me but what about clarification on the rules and all? Ripped gfx yes/no? Ripped sound yes/no? How much prior code will be allowed?

well, why not make it so anyone who wants too can participate? If the last few were any sign, the more the merrier. So what date is good for you?

about graphics/sound/engine:

Well, I like the "keep it upfront" idea...it works for me. I think the main thing here is to get a game finished within the time frame, not create an UBER-game that the gods would weep over. So premade graphics/sound/music/engine is all ok. Premade Levels/plot are not.

How about the weekend after that then? ...it'll give us all one more week to get ready.

...and allowing all that pre-made stuff sounds good... though, apart from using already existing engines I have, I'll probably opt to do everything else during that time frame... I like a challenge, heh.

I'm happy that premade stuff is allowed, especially for the engine part. Further more, I'm even ok with having it a week later. It's uncertain if I'll be able to participate though, but I'll try.

well i'm only going to use premade engine+premade music (a musician i am not...)...and i'm hoping I can do it in 20 hours, since that's the only freetime i can set aside these days on any of my weekends....but I think the 48hour time frame should still stand. So it's going to be an extra challange for me. Week after that is perfectly ok for yours truly.

all times, like the last two compo's, will be posted in GMT. So just adjust the offset yourself :)
