Hello all,
DragonQuest: Redux is a remake of the original DragonQuest game. It uses tilesets from DragonQuest Reprise I&II for the Super Famicom and is 95% accurate to the original game. DragonQuest: Redux is being produced as the first test game for my new Game engine CoRE, which stands for Classic Rpg Engine. CoRE is being developed and programmed to create simple RPG's in the vein of the classic console era games such as Dragon Quest and the original Final Fantasy. It is being developed 100% in RealBASIC which is very similar to VisualBASIC. Please stop by the website and take a look at the development progress.
Current Development is moving along nicely, I hope to have a release by mid to late Autumn 2004.

Seems nice, though I haven't played the dragonquest games...
Oh, and what's the 'o' in CoRE stand for? 'Sfar as I know, there's no 'o' in Classic RPG Engine... ;)
One major gripe I have with the screenshots: MIXED RESOLUTION = BAAAD. Either use 640*480 for everything, or use 320*200 for everything-- Don't use 640*480 and put double-sized low-rez graphics in to simulate 320... Or if you do, make it consistent! Don't use blatantly 640*480+ looking text, it clashes horribly with the classic blockiness of the rest. I'm sure you could use a bitmapped font to get the feel of the original text.
(I just know someone's going to say "you can't mix resolutions"-- But I'm sure you know what I mean. Of course you can't actually MIX them, but you can use double sized pixel art to look like 320*200 in 640*480.)
And it really wouldn't be that hard to have the 'Redux' in the title screen match the resolution of the rest of the screen... All you'd need to do is shrink the original title screen down by half (since I'm assuming it's blown up to twice the size), pixel in the 'redux', then blow it up again.
Sorry for ranting on about that-- Apart from that annoyance, I'm sure it plays excellently.

Never played DragonQuest?! Well...I can't say as you are missing much now, after all it is a pretty basic game and does not stack up to ANY RPG done in the last 10 years. But at the time man, it was a a great little game!
The "o" in CoRE doesn't stand for anything. Thats why it's lower case. It just serves to morph the other letters into a word that makes some sense... after all CRE doesn't mean anything, and only makes the product sound archaic like computer-speak. CoRE is more imaginative sounding than CRE. wouldn't you agree?
I don't mind the blockiness of the graphics (scaled to 640x480 from 320x240). Gives it a nice retro look. I do agree with you about the text, both on the title page and the messageboxes though.

I certainly don't mind the blockiness at all... In fact, I prefer 320*200 over 640*480 for rpgs in most cases. (2d rpgs that is)
About the CoRE name-- lowercase letters are usually small words like 'the', 'of', 'it', etc... I can't say I've ever seen a lowercase letter just for the sake of the name, but then again it does sound cool.
Oh, and I'm sure I would enjoy Dragon Quest. (dragon warrior?) Seeing as I enjoyed the first Final Fantasy, the first Ultima, and prefer old-school early 90s/late 80s 2d rpgs, I don't think I would have a problem with its simplicity. ;)

...If you're gonna make a Dragon Quest clone, please please include an easy mode a la Final Fantasy Origin's FFI easy mode. ...I had heard that at level 20 I would stand a chance against the Dragon Lord. ...No such luck. It took so long to get there, and for what? That game was so rediculously boring.... How ever did any one person ever actually beat the thing? It was an unequaled waste of time and energy....
But if you do take on the challenge of making the game beatable by more than 2% of the population, then you will always be remembered for your bravery and courage.
About the graphics blockiness, allow me to recommend the HQ2x vector graphics filter. ;)

Dragon Quest 1 was hard?? Thats news to me. DW was the first RPG I ever played, I was only 8 or 9 at the time. I don't recall ever thinking the game was overly difficult. All the battles are 1 on 1, so you never have to worry about being outnumbered, and you really only have 3 battle options: hit, heal, or run. That makes the decision making process pretty simple. Trying to beat it at level 20 would be pretty tough, but you'd really have to be conciously trying not to level up at all in order to get to the end with anything less than level 25.

I beat that game many, many times. DW1 is a pure exercise in survival - that is leveling up and saving money. And it provides probably the most pure experience of that type in any RPG that has come since (although DW2&3 come close). It is also totally unscripted. You can do things in pretty much any order- you can even beat the game without ever saving the princess.
If you make DW1 "easier" it would become boring. Obviously your argument is that the game is already boring, which I disagree with, but I fail to see how making the game easier would do anything to make the game MORE interesting. DW1 is already as I said not a difficult game, and the only way to further simplify it would be to eliminate the sole focus of the game: powering up your character.
As for this game, it looks great. A friend of mine got the SFC DQ1-2 remake not long after it came out and I was blown away. I've thought many times about making my own DQ remake and/or remix but never gotten it done. Kudos. But please find a blocky fixed-width font to use, the smoothness doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would but the lack of fixed-width-ness makes the data boxes tough to read.

Yeah, DragonQuest I is as easy as it gets really.... I've won it about 6 or 7 times now. I can see how some would find it boring because pretty much all you do is go around and collect gold and experience. By today's standards that is a pretty uninteresting concept for an RPG.
The first console style RPG I ever played was Phantasy Star for Sega Master System. It was pretty sweet, and had a lot more going on than Dragon Quest. But to this day I only played through it all the way once. Dragon Quest was not that involved but something just clicked about it... The unencumbered concept (save the princess, kill the dragon), mixed with the imaginative graphics(come on admit it... even the old 8bit version had cool looking monsters!) and all tied together with an excellent soundtrack that fit the mood of the game perfectly.
By the way, the low res look is on purpose. This is a remake, meant to bring back that old retro DragonQuest feeling. An HQ2X filter would kinda of ruin the effect I think.

For some maybe, but not for all. Why not make the effect optional?
It is your game after all. Oh well, I never was a fan of Dragon Quest anyway. ...If I want an excercise in survival, I'll turn off my computer. ;) I play games to escape the struggle to survive, not to explore it further. :\
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to walk five miles to get my paycheck, so that I don't go hungry tonight.
