Just thought it would be a good idea to kickstart this new music forum with a competition. Nothing too major, maybe just a one-song deal. Like someone outside of the compo writes a short story snippet and the competitors write a song to evoke the mood of it. Then everyone votes for who did the best job of matching the mood. Any other ideas?

I think that is a cool idea.

If it does happen, then I'll be a competitor. :)

I'll give it a try, but I'm not sure about that way of doing things :)

Well, I'm open to any suggestions on how to do the compo. My idea was just something off the top of my head.

I once ran a monthly music contest where a single-word theme was announced at the start of the month, and entries had to be submitted by the end of the month. Some themes were "wind", "darkness", and "sadness". I think a similar format could work here as well.

...Didn't mean to send a negative vibe through this thread or anything, sorry :)

I've very excited about this contest, and I don't really care how we do it. Since I brought it up though, here's a few suggestions off the top of my head:

(1) We try to compose a song in the style of a video game master, e.g. Nobuo Uematsu, Martin Galway, Akira Yamaoka, Mark Hall, whatever :)

(2) Either Rainer's or Xmark's idea - we take an emotion/setting and compose a piece to match it.

(3) Being an RPG board, we could compose a song to suit a generic RPG situation, i.e. a battle theme, town theme, castle etc...

(4) We could just go totally free, and compose one song with no restrictions.

(5) We could impose technical limitations - i.e. must use only four instraments, must use midi...

(6) I've run out of ideas.

And we should do it as soon as possible. I suggest we start this weekend, and finish whenever everyone participating is ready.

I dislike this idea for a couple of reasons:
  • I am not really familiar with any of these names.
  • Just because somebody is considered a master doesn't mean I like their style, or wish to imitate it (even for a contest).
  • I really don't feel up to the challenge of imitating somebody else's style. Composing in my own style is difficult enough for me.

Heh, that's ok. It was kind of a joke anyway.
