Here is the theme for Bokk, the main character of The ARC Legacy
http://abstract-productions.net/music/bokk.mp3
I started it a week ago, but I did pretty much the entire second half just tonight because I got so freakin' hyped about how realistic the orchestra is sounding, especially the brass section. I've been trying to do this kind of brass sound for years and finally it's working! HELL YEAH!
Heh, I'm a little excited. _________________ Mark Hall

Where the hell did you get those samples?!
Lemme guess, they're all midi samples and you just used them really well. =p

Bingo! It's all MIDI. Most of the instruments are from the awesome (free) sinfonia soundfont:
http://home.clara.net/fworld/sinfonia.htm
Although I tweaked the slow strings a bit so they have a longer attack and decay. A little harder to use that way but they sound more emotive.
I used two different brass instruments. One is the French Horn from Sinfonia, which actually sounds really fake when played normally, but just add a little reverb and BAM, realism.
The other is an old horn sample that I used back when I was tracking XM's, converted to a Soundfont. You'll find it in a lot of my old Changeling XM's. It's a pretty low-quality sample (you can hear tons of noise, and I could never find a good loop point) so I never use it solo but it has a really powerful effect when added to an ensemble. _________________ Mark Hall

It sounds real good. I can't say I'm surprised that it uses MIDI samples though, in fact I'd be surprised if it didn't. It has a flavor much the same as good old Y's IV for Duo.

Really? heh, I was trying to go away from my usual Nobuo imitation and tried for more of a movie soundtrack sound... guess old habits die hard :) _________________ Mark Hall

Well, it seems to me that musical composition is related at least in part to a person's personality. So maybe having a style like Nobuo's own is just natural, perhaps. It could be a better idea, maybe, not to distance oneself from Uematsu at all, but instead to elaborate on the innate style that he draws from, with ones own style. So to say, it may not be the man that makes the music, but the music that makes the man.

While it was similar to his style, it DID infact have a movie soundtrack feel to it. (I just listened to it again)
I have a question.
What do you use to do that? Are you using ModPlug and a midi keyboard? Do tell if you don't mind.
I mainly use Cakewalk Professional and the mouse, but sometimes I use Modplug. I really need to get my midi keybaord connected.....I think I'll do that after I type this post..I'm feeling like writing a short piece. ;) _________________ Principal Software Architect
