Hey all. Just wanted to know if any of you know where I can get good creature sound effects without having to really pay through the nose? I'm looking for stuff like rat squeeks and goblin sounds and stuff like that. I can't currently record my own, cos my recording equipment is not currently here. Any help will be appreciated. _________________ So sue me, I'm clueless!

You could start out at http://www.findsounds.com/ but I found 80% of what you find there is crap. Sadly, you really need to pay for good sounds, unless you're willing to spend hours upon hours sifting through low-quality free samples to find the occasional gem.
Also, note that some of the WAV files actually use MP3 compression so they might not work in a game until you convert them to standard WAV.
EDIT:
If you're looking for creature sounds, you should try combining different regular animal sounds together, adding effects, adjusting the sampling rate, et cetera. You'd be surprised what you come up with. _________________ Mark Hall

I found out, after trying to find good sound effects, that it's always the easiest to do them yourself. For example, for the sound of a stone statue being moved in Crystal Quest, I just scraped a tape case overtop of my keyboard and recorded it.
Yeah, turn on the Discovery channel and record from that as well. _________________ "Well, last time I flicked on a lighter, I'm pretty sure I didn't create a black hole."-

Hmm, findsounds.com seems to just search the whole web for sounds, most of which are probably not free to use. I'd agree with Mandrake, that doing them yourself is the best option. It's the same as with the graphics, creating them yourself is more fun and has a good chance of yielding a more interesting game in the end.
Only I can advice you that going into the wood after midnight to record some sounds won't get you very far... we tried that, and although it was fun, the wood was very quiet and basically the only thing we could record were our own footsteps. Though maybe your woods are different.

So true. If you spend a few days learning how to produce good SFX, you'll save yourself a ton of grief searching for that one "perfect" effect that you need. There are just under 50 different sound effects used in Frenetic Plus, and I made them all in a single day -- if you have the right programs and creativity, you can really pump out good SFX in no time.

One thing I love about doing my own sound fx is when it sounds like it's actually supposed to. When you get this crazy idea in your head (I bet I can make this sound like this) and it actually does work. Very satisfying. _________________ "Well, last time I flicked on a lighter, I'm pretty sure I didn't create a black hole."-
