PostPosted: Wed May 24, 2006 3:29 pm    Post subject: Best Book that Should Be a Game [quote]

I have already posted this topic on RPG-Dev, but I was interested to see what you guys thought. What book would make a great video game that isn't one yet?

Mine: The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. It would probably be puzzle-oriented instead of combat, becuase Covenant doesn't do much fighting. It would also (as BadMrBox from RPG-Dev already pointed out) probably be rated M for "adult content" (i.e. he rapes a girl and his daughter offers to have sex with him... yeesh p3rv3rt al3rt).

I prefer to be called BadMrBox from RPGDX :P. And, you already know that I would like to see the Shannara books as games (and movies for that matter).

Maybe the Sword of Truth books. Most of them have plenty of combat, which would make them entertaining. I think a game set in the same world but with a different story would be even better.

However, it's irrelevant. Terry Goodkind (the author) says that he'll never let any derived works be made from the Sword of Truth books.

Richard Adams' Watership Down would make a kick-ass MMO. Crazy bunny-on-bunny combat, psychic visions of blood running over fields, hopping scared through dark forests filled with foxes and owls, and twisting warrens to run through in near-darkness.

It's not all that far-fetched, either. One of the first pen-and-paper RPG's was Bunnies and Burrows, which has that exact premise (embellished a bit with herbalism and empaths, which would have snug kinship with clerics and mages in your typical fantasy game).

Why, the best book to turn into an RPG would be Wuthering Heights of course! The drama and relevance would captivate the player while avoiding RPG stereotypes and tropes.

I want to change my answer...

Here's what books would make the best RPGs.

1) Lord of the Flies.
2) Huckleberry Finn.
3) A Brief History of Time.
4) The Party of Death: The Democrats, the Media, the Courts, and the Disregard for Human Life
5) Ann Coulter: Treason
6) Charlotte's web
7) Harry Potter
8) The Da Vinci Code

Although I don't know if they're RPGs or not, both of these have already been made into games.

I would like a video game of Stephen King's "It", or perhaps "The Stand" or "The Shining". A video game of Anne Rice's "Interview With The Vampire" would rock seriously.

This thread hasn't been posted in for a while but I have an addition. Twelve Swords by Fred Saberhagen. Very nice and fun to read books. If you can find even one of them you may wish to pick it up and check it out.
