This here's my latest Dwelling of Duels entry
Cyanide

Got 8th place out of 35 competing entries, which ain't too shabby if you ask me. I was really pushing my guitar technique this time around, I think it's paying off.

downloading the mp3 now................

...

oh my God!

okay, dude I give you a 15 out of 10!
as a fellow guitar player, I must say I am impressed with this piece.

Please, you have to tell me, what are you using to get that sound? what guitar, what amp, what fx.

I use a Roland Micro-Cube with Marshall amp-modding and heavy reverb, and a 1962 Gibson SG Custom, running through a Tapco 6 channel mixer board, into a crappy $35 CompUSA sound card. Recording is done with Audacity.

Wow...I just added the song to my favorites..I'll be listening to that one alot. :) :)

The guitar is a Samick, basically an el cheapo Strat knockoff. And the amp isn't very high-quality either. Though I'm miking the amp with a Shure SM57 microphone, connected to my MBox audio interface (great, high-quality audio interface that comes with built-in preamps) The distortion is from a Korg A5 effects pedal which I found at a pawn shop last year, and I use for all my recordings. I'd like to have more distortion effects to choose from, though.

The guitar actually sounds pretty weak by itself, it's the mixing of the guitar and the bass, coupled with some EQ tweaking, that gives it the punch.

The first wanky solo part is just straight distortion with a little reverb but most of the other lead guitar parts hav either the chorus effect on, or I'm using a wah-wah pedal.

The MIDI drums are from the free Titanic soundfont (room kit), though I tweaked them to have louder toms, moved the panning of the high-hat to the center, and added a cymbal that I can cut off to simulate the "grab the crash cymbal after hitting it" technique. Plus I boosted the extreme high and low frequencies to bring out the cymbals and kick drum.
