They really pan the game, but this was a classic in a classic era! In QB of all forms, console-style gameplay! The only thing it didn't have was a map engine, and truth be told, it doesn't really need one. I'll never forget the epic struggle to defeat the dread dragon Keela.

I've never played this game and probably never will, but looking at the screenshots, the low rating for graphics is undeserved. Using that style of graphics is a bold artistic choice, and the result looks better than some commercial games I could name.

Back in '95 it was really difficult to do anything with QB beyond text adventures (or text graphics) and the occasional ModeX demo. Although things changed quickly, right at that time it was just S-L-O-W any way you went about it. And everything else was in the $200+ range. So although I think it could stand a remake, it is actually pretty interesting to play. Just straightforward fighting and talking. It isn't all linear, though. Or maybe I'm thinking about the sequels....

I acually tried to play the ring of everdown Demo a couple of weeks ago and it was totally unplayable :(. The fights is totally unsynced. That one I could make a remake on. If the original creator accepts it that is. _________________

I think it flickered horribly to but it was a couple of years ago I played it so I cant really say. The graphics on the other hand is simple looking in good old fashion way. _________________

What do you mean by trolling?
I've not heard anything about the sequels. They seem hard to find. They were longer though... the third actually bored me, I remember. And I was 13! A 13 year-old, bored. That says a lot.
I never could bring myself to make something like that myself. And it was a mess of GOTOs and GOSUBs, so I was little inclined to try working with the code at the time. The plot wasn't anything special, but neither was anything else in '95 plotwise. (save FFVI, perhaps) It was entertaining, but not worth a remake, I don't think.
It did hook me on QB, though.

The last 2 chapters in the story were done in beautiful tiled graphics!
I don't have but 1-3 available to me though, as I have lost the last two chapters through the years.
4 and 5 were shareware, with a $10 pricetag, though well worth it.

I mean, even though the three games (I haven't played or heard of the supposed last two devx speaks of) hold a good deal of nostalgia for me I really wouldn't consider them to be anything above sub-par in the gameplay department. True, the graphics had an interesting and unique style... but that's about it, really. Even the story wasn't overly captivating.
It could just be me, but I dunno... I mean, think of it this way. A fun game remains fun through the ages (look at all the classics), and if you play a dated (rather, slightly dated in this case) game that really isn't much fun nowadays, chances are the gameplay hasn't magically declined due to the passing of years. Basically, things like sound quality, graphics, etc. tend to improve with time, but gameplay/fun factor isn't really something you can just kinda... take up a notch as the years go by like you could do with graphics and the improving technology to do so. Dunno if that made any sense. :p

Alright, now, first off, TLF had a few things that it should be recognized for.
1. a completed project
2. interesting concept
3. unique animated graphics (as far as qb games went, this had the most graphics when it was made.)
Now, I agree that the gameplay itself wasn't too complex in itself. Granted the gameplay was honestly an afterthought. It was not planned out during the project's development.
However, it was simple, and easy for younger players to play.
The dev group released a small patch file that fixed the flicker in the animations, however the sites that had the patch are long gone now (server space changes over the years. It happens)
I've been searching for a copy of TLF 4 and 5 for at least the past 2 years to no avail. :(
The sound wasn't great, but it worked.
I hear you all now: "Sound? THERE WAS NO F**KING SOUND!"
Well, thats not completely true.
Remember the flicker patches?
They added the missing sound to the game.
The released versions were SUPPOSED to have sound during 3 major parts, but the code was corrupted during development, and it was not released with sound.
TLF wasn't made to be the best, nor was it a technological-barrier-breaking event when it was released, but TLF was surely a good game for qbasic-newbies to learn from.
Nowadays, there are plenty more qb games to learn better coding practice from, like DarkDread's In the Nocturne. :D
I might be rambling by now, as I'm exhausted because of work.
