I am a new member who came over from Allegro.cc when I found out about the February Lilith's Enticement game creation contest.
The rules are a little vague and I would hate for a months work to get disqualified for not following them properly.
Does a game like Diablo qualify for this contest. I am not going to remake Diablo but I want to know if the game play elements:
*point and click attacking
*very little story save "you must kill ____ they have done great evil"
* leveling helps you kill bigger stuff you encounter later
Satisfy the RPG requirement.
I am big on programming but not so big on story writing.

Welcome! Yes, that qualifies for the contest.
I look forward to seeing your entry! :) _________________ Principal Software Architect

You can pretty much get away with making whatever as long as it's vaguely a RPG?

That's a bloody good question. I've never come across a definition I'm happy with.
This subject feels familiar though - I found this thread with a search. Surprise surprise, doesn't look like we came to any consensus, but there are a few good definitions proposed.
[edit: now that I think of it, I'm pretty sure I was the deus ex guy in that thread, heh] _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

I've always said that an RPG is easy to define if you take a look at a basic concept of book writing....is your game a novel or a short story? If it's a novel, then it's an RPG, and not otherwise. _________________ If you play a Microsoft CD backwards you can hear demonic voices. I don't think it's that simple. I mean, to take a random example, Max Payne is undeniably more a Novel than a short story. But it's certainly not an RPG.
Unless you define any plot driven game as an RPG. Honestly, it's something that's ill enough defined that you could get away with it.
I think the difference between most games and RPGs is akin to the difference between, say, Monopoly and D&D. _________________ http://www.distractionware.com
