PostPosted: Sun Mar 04, 2007 6:07 pm    Post subject: Unlistenable lo-fi trash [quote]

Okay, I won't harbor any ill will if you guys hate me for this. :p
This is a cover of a Silent Hill 2 song called Angels Thanatos-- I haven't actually played the game much, but a friend showed me the song from the soundtrack and it was too fucking cool not to cover.

...Now here's the catch... Ultimate lo-fi horribly recorded trash rock production. This song is meant to sound like a crappy, clipped, over-compressed first take of a garage rock band's demo on an old dusty vinyl being played on a turntable with half-blown speakers.

For some reason I really like how it sounds. It sounds like shit, but intentionally so, and... I dunno, maybe I'm just gaining an appreciation for stupidly lo-fi stuff. Anyway, here's the link:

Don't blame me for any tissue damage to your ears. Seriously, this song may just be unlistenable on some speakers. :p

Just for kicks (and contrast), here's another song I finished the other day:

Probably the most pretentiously happy song I've ever written, it's sort of a mellow acoustic thing. A little bit like some of Jack Johnson's stuff. I'm still fairly new at singing, so while I hit the notes, I don't claim my technique to be excellent or anything. I'm proud of how it came out, though:

Heh, you've picked an interesting song to cover. I'm a huge fan of Akira Yamaoka's music, and Silent Hill 2 is probably my all-time favourite game.

It's sorta weird to take a very heavy song and make it even heavier - personally I'm not really into lo-fi stuff, but I think this is kinda cool. I'd love to hear you take on one of the more melodic songs from the game.

Well, here's a version with non hi-fi drums and redone guitars, and without any of the processing/distortion:

I still like the lo-fi version for the novelty, but I can see how most people would probably prefer this one. :p

Any particular song(s) you had in mind when you said I should cover some more melodic ones from the game? I have the soundtrack, but I've heard it doesn't have all the music from the game.

Heh, yeah, I prefer that version personally. Maybe other people around here would prefer the lo-fi one though, I don't know.

I love "True", but it's been covered quite a bit already. "Laura Plays The Piano" would be an ace song to cover along those lines though.

"Alone in the town" would also be a great song to cover, I think. It's probably more your sorta thing too :) Oh! And a gothy "The Day of Night" would be awesome!

Actually I found the lo-fi version too tame for my taste. I've taken the liberty of applying a high-pass filter, amplifying the fuck out of it, and uploading the result: http://eldwood.com/tmp_stuff/Angels_Thanatos_remix.ogg. Hope you don't mind.

(Edit: Fixed link.)

Hmm, that link doesn't work. Is there anywhere else you could upload it? I'm really curious to hear it. :)

EDIT: Haha, that actually sounds pretty cool. I guess for whatever reason I'm finally starting to 'get' this kinda production.
