I don't see too much wrong with it. I always appreciate a game a little bit more if it uses original music, but it's not a show-stopper for me if it doesn't. Diver Down, for example, used public domain music I believe... And it's one of my all-time favorite Indie RPGs.

Something to keep in mind is that any recording or other reproduction of a piece of music is itself a copyrighted work. If I was to create a MIDI file of (for example) Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, then I would own the copyright for that MIDI file and it would be illegal for you to use it in a game without my permission.

It wouldn't bother me, for whatever that's worth :)

A commercial game that I've been keeping an eye on is basically doing what you're suggesting, only recording their own versions of Chopin's music. (The game's called Eternal Sonata. If it gets the basics right (and unfortunately right now it looks like it might not), this could be the sorta thing that really sets it apart.)

Or, more on topic, you could just use Amiga MODs, like the excellent Diver Down did. People seem to have a blind spot for that whole area of music, it seems. You'd totally get away with it :)

Which is why he specifically stated public domain. :)

I think he is referring to the MIDI file of the public domain music.

Diver Down used mostly public domain music, but I composed the title theme for it specifically.

Holy crap I posted here again.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the title music. Sorry 'bout that.
"A bird can fly but a fly can't bird. That's fucked up." ...Perhaps there's something wrong when I somehow associate that phrase with one of your posts. :p

What have you been up to lately, fellow British Columbianite and guitar mage who makes the people fall down?

I'm mostly hanging around vgmix.com and the minibosses forum at theshizz.org nowadays. I haven't been too much into game programming lately, more into music composition.

Same here. I've increasingly been believing time spent trying to put together a videogame is wasted. I like putting together the tools more than the game. Thinking of ways for things to interact in a way that is "fun" is not my forte.

And I don't understand music at all, frankly.

You should post some of your new music here! I just listened to Bokk's theme on your site - I guess I musta missed that one.

It's a pity you're not so much into game development anymore - The Arc Legacy was certainly showing a lot of promise, and I really enjoyed Blorp Zingwag!
