came across this site... I'm totally going to try an attempt here!
One Hour Game Programming Contest!
http://cgamesplay.com/minorhack/
C, C++ & Allegro and should compile & run on windows & linux.
No premade code, this looks like alot of fun. 1 hour to hack out a game ......yeah, this is most certainly going to be interesting.. _________________ Principal Software Architect

I'd love to take on a smaller project right now, but 1 hour? There's no way I'd manage to get anything interesting out in that kinda time...
Though it might be a fun way to spend an hour. Why not? :) I'm in too.
...even if it is at 1 in the morning... hmm. _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

:) I'm preparing by doing "drills" where I try to write as much of a game in an hour as I can, each time starting over but with a better sense of direction than the last. so far I can get about halfway into a space invaders game..kind of depressing that I couldn't finish it in an hour, but oh well. the more I start over, the faster I'm getting, so maybe by the time its contest time, I'll be able to complete the game in 60 minutes....hehe.
True, its certainly a SHORT amount of time to write a game, especially in a language as C/C++. But, its a definite challenge of programming skill & typing speed. ;)
no 15 letter variables..takes too much time. 1 & 2 maybe 3 letters at max....heh the code will certainly be messy, and quite hard to decipher a month from writing it...but if it compiles & runs, then thats all that matters.
I have yet to find out if you're allowed to use resources (like bitmaps, music, wavs) but if not, then the game will need the gfx to be created at runtime..which is really fun, lol.
I'm aiming for a space invaders clone done with vector-based graphics instead of raster based bitmaps. (like my old Nadierian Chaos game's gfx)
I need to cut down a little more on my architecture of the engine to write it faster. more pre planning will need to be done in order to complete it in an hour....well, here goes drill #6 (six hours of writing & starting over, lol....) _________________ Principal Software Architect

I don't know if I'll bother taking part. Mainly because I'm afraid I'll get attached to whatever little thing I end up creating, and I'll spend the next few months working at it.
Also, this is totally the opposite to how I usually program - normally, I carefully put together some shell of a feature, then spend hours tweaking it. I actually don't think I'd be able to do this.
On the other hand, I do think quick hacking like this is a skill you can learn. And one I probably should learn, at that. I'm astonished at people like Azereal, or Cactus, or Nifflas, who can just take some small idea and run with it, and create something really neat.
Hmm... that was random.
On the subject of contests, TIGSource, one of my favourite websites, is thinking about running a contest in april. They've only recently opened their forums, and this will be their first. If I wasn't still finishing my February contest entry, I'd probably take part in that, heh. _________________ http://www.distractionware.com
