For the last six months or so, I've been using the handle "Echo", named from a character in an Adam Cadre book I liked. To be honest, I only changed because I was getting sick of the old one. Now I'm sick of this one.
However, I'm having trouble thinking of anything new.
So, I was just wondering how all of ye came up with yours, and if you're happy with it. Also, suggestions for a new one are welcome.

I came up with mine when I had to make a new D&D character. This was when I wanted to learn Japanese but hadn't started yet. Thus since I didn't know about kana, I wrote it in a way that was impossible for Japanese - Ninkatzu.
I didn't use it as a handle until I was requested to post with a consistent handle on the Darkness Ethereal board. After a while I actually did start learning Japanese, so I switched to Ninkazu. It has no meaning and is not used ANYwhere else on the web. Great how that works, eh?
As for coming up with a new handle - think about what inspires you and will continue to inspire you. I'm sure you can make something meaningful and unique.

The first nickname I used was because people always thought I was cold-hearted. So, I called myself Snowball (later I used sn0ball instead, to be 'l33t'). Later, I figured I needed something more complex and memorable, so I modified "Necrophidius" from AD&D to be "Nekrophidius". Later still, deciding that nickname was too "tainted", I decided to change again, and changed it to honor one of my favorite musicians, Jon Nodtveidt. So, "Nodtveidt" became my new handle. In between these three names, I've used a number of other nicknames, the most notable one being "Knight Of Fire", which became my tracker name, named after my favorite soundtrack from Xenogears. I've stuck with Nodtveidt for quite a number of years now, and everyone in the PCE scene where I've settled in knows me by that name. One might think I'd want to change it, considering the real Nodtveidt took his own life last year, but I can't help but respect his reason for doing so, so I kept it the way it is.
When in doubt though, use your own name, or a variation of it. No name says "you" better than your own name. _________________ If you play a Microsoft CD backwards you can hear demonic voices. The scary part is that if you play it forwards it installs Windows. - wallace

Strange, I thought most people would identify you as nek (nekrophidius).

Sooner or later, I'm going to come up with a cool name, but until then I'm using my initials. :)

I use my real name everywhere. I used to go by handles, but I sorta got sick of that and I enjoy keeping everything I do under one name: mine. :p

Only those who originally knew me by that name. I haven't used that handle in many years now, and it's only in service in one location, which is Pete's QB Site's forum, which I almost never visit anymore anyways (dead as a doornail over there these days). I'd change it there too if I could.
EDIT: Well speak of the devil, Pete's forum now allows you to change your username. So, guess what I did? :) _________________ If you play a Microsoft CD backwards you can hear demonic voices. The scary part is that if you play it forwards it installs Windows. - wallace

It really is. Something unique with a personal significance is exactly what I'm looking for. If only I could think of something like that, heh.

I'm sorely tempted to go that route :) The only reason I haven't is because of privacy concerns - I hate the idea that, say, somebody from work can google me and find out about my site, where I've been talking about quitting. _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

First name combined with the initial of your last (or middle) name is generally pretty anonymous given the number of people on the Web.
My handle "Verious" came from the fact that I was using "various" handles on different sites and decided to consolidate them. The small spelling variation made it unique.

I came up with mine shortly after being asked to change my alias/handle/nick/whatever from DieWrecktExe (DWE) a long time ago.
I was learning DirectX 7 at the time and I wanted something with X in it....so I called myself DeveloperX. heh.
I've been known by many aliases prior to DWE; however, being the naive brat that I was back then, I caused much chaos and ended up with a really really bad reputation...I've grown a lot since those years, and I've become much more social and personable, and to top it off, I don't sit and have long conversations about stuff I don't know anything about. I've done as best as I could to give back to the community anytime I could do so, and I have learned that to be respected you show respect. I have done this as DeveloperX, and as such I believe that this alias will stick with me until I die.
Now, as for you; You should grab any book from anywhere at random and select a random page and then a random word from that page. Do this until you find something that you like.
Do this about ten times, and then try to build something from your results. (an idea that I use for creating names for various things)
Another idea is to use an alternate spelling of your name; or your name in reverse.
I've been known as Skram (ess-kay-ram) which is Marks (my last name) in reverse.
Have fun. _________________ Principal Software Architect

I don't think that'll work for me. (Yrret? Retry? :))
Frankly, I think my first name is rare enough in indie gaming circles that I might just get away with the handle "Terry", sorta like how Derek Yu uses just "Derek" and Bernie just uses Bernie, and so on. Or how our Adam gets by despite the trillions of other Adams out there. _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

Terry eh? Gonna take a minute to get use to not calling you Echo (Retry would have been the best nick ever thought). _________________
