Hello all, I've been directed to this forum by Mike Kasprzak over at gamedevelopersrefuge.org. Here's my question - fingers crossed that one or more of you can help me out with it...
I'm very much not from your world. I work as a writer / script editor in TV in the UK. And I'm working on developing a comedy show based within an RPG/ SecondLife-style-community-thing. What we're looking for is an old (or not so old) abandoned RPG that we could use as our 'world'. All we need is a virtual world (that 'works') a way of distinguishing characters, and a way of having them speak. And do stuff. What exactly the world is, and what characters can do in it is not that important. As long as they can meander around and say things and do some stuff. The limitations might end up being part of the fun.
We'd be looking to develop the world, and our ideas, with whoever has such a game available. It should be quite fun.
(That's it -- sell it -- "quite fun!!")
Anyway, if anyone has anything, or knows of anything that fits this description, I'd be unnaturally delighted and grateful.
Yours,
Charlie, aka 'onaquest'.

Sounds like an interesting project. Without knowing exactly what you intend to do with the engine it's hard to give you any pointers, but a good place to start might be the open source allegro RPG KQ. If you're looking for an engine, I'm always advocating OHRRPGCE. You could even have a look at the commercial project RPG Maker XP to see if that sorta thing is allowed (I can't imagine there'd be any real problem with it - after all, there are a couple of shareware games out there using the RPG Maker engine, and there doesn't seem to be a problem with that).
If none of these are any good, I can probably come up with a few more. _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

I wonder how much programming/scripting/artwork you're planning on doing. If the answer is not much or none at all, I'm afraid your quest will be short-lived.

Thanks for that, "Sheila's Rent Boy". I'll follow up your very handy leads. I suppose I've got the idea in my head (possibly this is incredibly naive) that there are playable 'half-games' out there that will never be released but are still perfectly useable. I'll keep scouring, but any other thoughts you have would be most gratefully received. The one thing I'd say is that it would have to look at least vaguely 'SecondLifey' insofar as it shouldn't be too blocky, like this:

Whatever sort of world it is, we need distinguishable characters moving through a landscape....
Thanks again
Charlie

[........ I'm really confused -- I can't see the words "Sheila's Rent Boy" and I can't remember where I saw them, and now I'm paranoid that I had another window open, got confused, and bafflingly insulted you. If that's the case, I do apologise. Either way, I've managed to confuse myself....]

Heh, that's hilarious :) Sorry for the confusion - I've been changing my handle trying to find one I liked, and that was one I tried. ("Sheila's Rent Boys" was the name of a band I was in a couple of years ago) _________________ http://www.distractionware.com

Here's one: Asguard Online. Though the server goes down a lot, and I'm not sure what the current status is. Very small membership, so you'd have almost free run of it. _________________ "Sometimes it is better to light a flamethrower than to curse the darkness."
