Hey! Haven't posted here in a while, so I thought I'd make up for it by sharing something I created this week - it's not an RPG, but it *is* a "project", and didn't know what other forum to put it in :P

Self Destruct is a bullet hell shooter with procedurally generated enemy patterns. It's meant to be quite hard and frantic - the only goal in the game is to survive for 250 waves. We've entered it into TIGSource's Procedural Generation Competition.

Here's a few screenshots:

It's not the sorta thing I usually do, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out - especially since the bulk of it was made in one day :P

Download it here!

The game has a built in highscore table which you can see by pressing left and right on the menu screen, or you can see it online here:
http://distractionware.com/games/highscores/selfdestruct.php

The online highscore table in game was a first for me - I might write a tutorial on how it's done if anyone around here's interested :D

The game is a lot of fun and the graphics look great, but it runs way too fast on my computer... even running inside Virtual PC.

Nice, Terry :). It both looks and sounds awesome but it really do run very fast. It was all game over for me at 34 waves :(.

Haha, well, it's meant to be quite fast :P And hard. Though Verious, your problem could be that I used the windows high performance timer instead of the usual Allegro one, which might have caused timing issues :(

I got a bit further in the game since my post. I guess the speed just took me by surprise because most shooters ramp up the intensity over a couple waves of enemies instead of throwing you into the deep end of the pool right away. :)

Wow, I'm terrible at this game! Couldn't do anything past wave 14.

Two-hundred
And fifty waves,
To go.

Game,
Over.

Two-hundred
And fifty waves,
To go.

Game,
Over.

Etc etc. :P

I've never been very good at twitchy action games like this, though. It seems really polished and would probably be a lot of fun if I played bullet hell shooters with any regularity, hehe.

I guess that answers your question about the high score list (sorry I didn't get that message in time)-- 'Tobin' is most assuredly not me. :)

Awesome game Terry! Quite impressive looking!
Haven't had a chance to try playing it just yet actually. :\
I will the next time I boot my vista computer...as of now 'm on a linux machine with not enough ram to run a virtual machine.

Haha, sorry to hear that - you know you can absorb most of the bullets, right?

Yeah, I think it was just the speed of it that tripped me up. Probably just didn't play it long enough to really get the hang of it... I'll give it another go later on. :)

Likewise here. I'm determined to beat at least 50 waves ^^.

Seeing this I once again feel so uncreative ... random/procedurally created content always fascinated me, but I never thought of leaving the RPG genre with this idea.

Big thumbs up for this project, Terry!

Only 4 months and I found time to actually test. And it's ... like ... super, hyper, funfuntastic :)

Now to get on the highscore list. That'll be a challenge, I guess. I really wish I had some hours at my hands now, to try that.

Congrats for the game Terry! It's great fun, me likes :)

Edit: pushed my record to 100 waves, but only 367.000 and some points. How do people get 2.4 million points and more ... I guess the latter waves are worth a whole lot more. Now to get there :P

Edit 2: 138 waves now, 740.500 points. Once one gets the hang of it, it seems easier ... until the heavy lines of red bullets appear. Gack, need a new strategy for those. Cool game Terry, definitely. Big thumbs up!

Cheers, I'm glad you liked it!

The highscore tables are crazy at this point :o To even score a place you need to finish the all 250 waves - and even then it's not guaranteed :(
