I've been trying different methods of grass tiles lately, but I'm having a hard time dealing with it.

I'm very new with pixel art, but I'm really trying to get better every moment

is there any good tutorial out there for side view (not Isometric) grass tiles and other sorts of vegetations?

Maybe this can help:

http://www.gas13.ru/v3/tutorials/sywtbapa_almighty_grass_tile.php

(That tutorial was originally on some other site, but my link was broken. I've googled to find it again and got the above site.)

The tutorial is good indeed if you want retro-style graphics. And grass can be really tricky.

If you go for semi-realistic looks, the easiest will be to use a grass texture from a texture library or if you are desperate do what I did and let a raytracer render a patch of some thousand blades of grass.

The latter has the benefit you can try a lot of parameters easily.

well we're aiming more of a dark look, think Castlevania instead of secret of Mana as a difference, like, 7-8 heads tall character.

I wouldn't want a kick ass character in a overly cartoony/manga-ish setting :)

I know neither of those games, but 7-8 heads is the classic canon for "average" to "heroic" people. So I assume you aim at fairly realistic graphics.

In that case you should try to render the grass tiles rather than to pixel them, that goes better with realistic characters. Just my opinion, though ;)

The grass in my avatar image. Or maybe on this screen:

Well it's not that special ;) Just that I was silly enough to render it from 20.000 grass blades. I'm sure there are simpler ways to achieve the same or better results. It's nicely seamless though, and not too repetitive in it's appearance.
