Most games now are 3D, regardless of the genre and platform. My question is are there any fans of 2D games out there? Every project and RPG i see is always 3D... 3D models, various camera angles/perspectives, and high resolution graphics. I know that's the technology biting programmers in the rear end, but does anybody desire old 2D gaming? (sprite-based, non-isometric view)? I ask this because someday I'd like to get my projects in the market or at least commercialize on something.

I grew up on Atari and C64 so it may just be a personal preference but I love the older games more than the newer ones (the newer ones seem to share the same technologies), not because of the retro-look but because they provide hours of entertainment and you can put more into a game when you spend less time dealing with how realistic it looks.

The DS scene is all about the 2D game experience. :)

I like to play a mixture of 2D and 3D games; however, I've always had a preference for top-view 2D games (like Zelda).

I think most PC and console developers feel they have to develop 3D games to take advantage of the processing power of current generation hardware.

I like 2d games. My favorite game is Final Fantasy 6 (3US) for SNES, and the two games I want to get ahold of the most are Final Fantasy 4 (2US) and Chrono Trigger for SNES.

Wow, I was gonna say something, but RedSlash beat me to it.

Yeah, if you want a big publisher to descend like some kind of capitalist angel and pay you millions to develop a 2D game, forget it.

And man, forget making a modern console game that's in 2D! Oh, except for all those XBLA games that are now in 2D... and the Wii releases of old 2D classics, and...

Ah while ago I felt urged to give a reasoning why my current project uses a 2D view (I consider isometric 2D, once for the technology used, and second because it's basically only a tricky way to put images onto a flat screen so that they give the impression of depth).

http://sonnheim.wiki.sourceforge.net/2D+View

You see, I very much favour 2D graphics for a number of ways.

Which doesn't mean 3D is necessarily bad, but to answer the initial question a bit more in depth than my former "I like 2D" which I posted in a hurry, I thought I give the link to my reasoning why Sonnheim will start with a 2D view.

I greatly prefer 2d over 3D, especially hand-pixeled 2D over polygonal 3D.

To me, 2D or 3D is no different. It really depends on the style of the game. If the game is suited to 2D but was made into 3D, then it wouldn't be very good. Likewise, if the game is more suited for 3D environment but was made into 2D, that wouldn't be any good neither. Most importantly is that the game is fun and the graphics suits the style of which the designer had in mind.

To go against the flow I prefer 3D games. Actually I prefer first person view 3D games as for me a 3D third person view is not that far from being an isometric view and then not too far from being a 2D game. I just find first person views more immersive ... I am the character rather than something hovering somewhere in the sky above the character.

But having said that I much prefer a good 2D game to a bad 3D game. Ultimately 2D or 3D is just a way of presenting the world and the things you can do in it. If there is no depth to that world or if the things you can do are boring then the most amazing graphics (be they 2D or 3D) aren't going to help much.

Oh, hey, then you should be all excited for Frayed Knights!

Oh, you said you don't prefer a BAD 3D RPG... nevermind... (No, actually, I expect FK to rock, but it's got a major tongue-in-cheek element).

I'm a proponent of 2D games, myself, but I'm pretty familiar with 3D game development. So I go with what I know... Maybe I'll do 2D next time.

In general, I like 2D games much more than 3D. I like them because the game play is almost always easier to grasp and because the graphical style just attracts me I guess. I think there are two primary reasons why I prefer 2D to 3D:

1) Everyone makes 3D games, and it gets tiring to have to manipulate actors and maneuver around in 3D environments all the time

2) Nostalgia. I just plain had more fun playing the 2D games back in the SNES days than I do playing the latest MMOFPSRPG now.

But, it kind of depends on the type of game. For example I prefer all my FPS games to be 3D, not 2D (like the old Doom games). RPGs I like to be 2D. And I think

It makes commercial sense for a small developer to target a niche market which is not being served by the mainstream developers.

Lots of people like 2D games, and personally, that's what I'll be focusing on from now on. 3D adds nothing but complexity, and there's no type of game which can be done in 3D which can't be done in 2D also :-)
